Churn Dash turns Modern with Hobbs

This month for our Island Batik Ambassador Challenge we were to make a baby size modern theme quilt and use Hobbs Batting in it.  Hobbs is an industry partner with Island Batik.

When I knew that May was our Modern month I was delighted and knew right away what I wanted to make.  No, no, no, I told myself when I kept thinking of other designs I could do instead.  No stick to the first design this month for once, I said!

I turned to EQ8 to mock up an elongated churn dash block.  And then set about designing a strip quilt with those blocks and some solid black spacers so that I could have the two outside rows of churn dash staggered.  To set it all off I finished with 2" colored Batiks alternating with solid black ones.  Did you know that Island Batik now has solids in Gray, Black and White.  They are just wonderful, but then all Island Batiks are wonderful;)

Then it was time to open a package of Hobbs Black batting.  Now using Hobbs is nothing new to me as I use it almost exclusively. However, I have never had the opportunity to use their black.  It was fabulous to use in this black quilt, I didn't have to worry about any batting pokies show through.  It does seem a bit thinner than the natural 80/20 that I use all the time.  But for this baby quilt that was not a problem as it will keep the quilt soft and snuggly.

Also helping to keep it soft I just did some freehand wavy lines every two inches.

Thank you Island Batik for providing the fabrics and Hobbs for the batting.   I have decided to donate this quilt for Sarah's H2H challenge.  My donations will be taken to our local Crisis Nursery center.

  3. What a great design, Vicki! I love the tall skinny churn dashes! Looks like you have plenty of batting left over for some other dark fabric projects, too.

  4. I have been wanting to get some black batting myself. I love the wavy lines you quilted. It's a quick way to get a nice look.

  5. nice pattern! I used black batting once I think it was Hobbs. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it didn't shrink up as much as regular cotton which is what I like - I like the antique look - I don't remember which the 80/20 is poly/cotton or cotton/poly

  6. Hi Vicki! WOWEE! This is a great finish for today. I love the churn dash block and have yet to make a quilt using it. Those colors look SO nice against the black, and the dashes around the border make it fun. Thanks for the closeup of your quilting pattern! That looks fairly easy and quick, plus it also isn't too dense to make the stiff. I had better PIN that quilting photo as my memory seems to be nonexistent at times. Happy Memorial Day to you and your peeps. ~smile~ Roseanne

  10. Tall churns are among my favorite blocks, and one of these days, I'm going to finish the Cherry Limeade that's been in progress for about 9 years! (If I set them this way, I'd probably have at least a lap quilt!) The quilting design is great, too.

  11. Loving the churn dash look! I can totally relate to having to remind yourself to stick to the original plan, too. In your case, it paid off!

  14. What a fun quilt Vicki! I love using black batting on black quilts. The batting out of the bag does always seem a bit thin but if you can get it off a roll, it is quite nice.
