UFO turns into Lion King snuggly

One of my goals this year is to make more donation quilts.  I thought it would be great to make at least 1 per month.  In the past I have been able to do more than that.  One year alone it was 30 quilts I made and donated.  There were all different sizes, it is just so satisfying to make and give. So the goal is 12 for the year and if I surpass that I'll be doing a happy dance.

So with that in mind here is the first flimsy all pieced.  Several years ago a friend gave me a stack of Lion King blocks.  There were only two different blocks and it had me puzzled as to a layout for them.  This year would be the start of using these and I came up with this setting.  As I often do I went to my stash to see what colors I could pull out to work with.  There is green, yellow and blue.  I thought there was enough blue in the blocks themselves, so I chose the yellow and the green for the main contrasting sashing.  The green made this turn out better than I thought!  It looks striped without any work:)  But the sashings would be pretty plain so I added the blue squares to break it up.

It is about 40" square and will make some baby a snuggly quilt. I don't have a definite plan for where I will donate it at this time.  The quilting will be done after I get several more made and quilt up a storm all at once;)

Do you enjoy making donation quilts?  I sure do!  Would you like to join me in making one per month this year?

  1. What a bright, fun quilt! I do enjoy making donation quilts. If I didn't donate quilts, my house would over flow with them. I make too many for family and friends and need to make them for my creative outlet.

  2. Hi Vicki! What a fun baby quilt. I know several people who just LOVE the Lion King and would adore this for their baby. The fabrics you chose for the borders and cornerstones are just perfect. Perfect I say! The blue is a gorgeous print and frames them so well, the yellow pulls out the lions hide and the green striped is the bomb. Fabulous. The only thing that would make it better is if a sweet baby was laying on it. ~smile~ Roseanne

  3. You have a great goal for your donation quilts, Vicki, and that is the perfect start! I don't think I can do as many as you, but I'll plan to try to do more to donate this year than in previous years, at least!

  9. This is such a fun top--there will be a child out there who will love it! I try to do at least 12 donation quilts a year (my goal this year is 20) and my son has been making some with me--we just finished a top yesterday! Donation quilts for kids are among my favorite thing to make.

  12. That is just as cute as anything! It will be well loved. I do enjoy making donation quilts, and make a lot for American Hero Quilts. I like donating baby quilts, too, and I do the H2H challenge every year. I always think I'll have tops ready to go before it comes, and I never do!
