To Do Tuesday #27

Last week was vacation so I had set no goals in the sewing studio.  It felt great to be away from the sewing machine. Really it did, which I find hard to believe as I live, eat and breathe sewing!  The week before I had set a goal to work on a lap quilt for which the blocks had been sewn.  I had three days in which to work on it before we left on vacay.  They now are sewn into rows and the rows sewn together.

Nancy had posted a quilt she had quilted for her sister, they are enablers;)  I really liked the pattern so off I went to purchase it.  Don't you just love digital downloads!  The very next day I started piecing it because I found just enough leftovers from a Pie Making Day jelly roll.  And I had a white with gray polka dot yardage in the stash.  The perfect combo.

The pattern calls for a 3" border of background fabric to make it a 51"x 51" quilt.  I am not fond of square quilts, had I had more of the jelly roll fabrics I would have made another row of blocks.  But I did not have more.  So I need your thoughts please...should I put the 3" called for border of background fabric on and call it good? Or option #2 as shown below,  put a 2" border of background fabric (because all the lattice between blocks are 2") and then add a 4" of the polka dot fabric that you see at the bottom of this photo?  Or is there a #3 option you would like to suggest.  I need your thoughts to help get this flimsy off the design wall!

I have a few table runners I want/need to get done this week.  So that will be a goal to get 2 turkey table runners done, finish 2 snowman hexie table toppers and hopefully move on to sunflower and poinsettia table runners.

Some pretty posies for your viewing.  Do you see a cucumber vine growing from the top pot?  It is a volunteer!  Well it might be. We are not sure how it appeared in there as I did not plant it.  It might have jumped into the potting soil when DH was doing his starter pots in the basement in the spring, it's the only thing we can think of. I don't really care for the look of it in there, but I thought I'd leave it for an experiment to see if it would actually produce cuc's.

  1. I would go check my stash (even the scrap pile) and find enough strips to make another row then add a 2" background border and call it good. Surely you can find 16 strips that are in the same color scheme.

  2. I agree with Shannon. I'd do anything to make it a useful size. It's really cute!

  3. I love these plus blocks. Yes, Nancy and her sister get us all into trouble ;-) and they seem to sew pretty fast doing it. HA!
I like the suggestion of looking for more scraps to make more blocks but I like your second option as well. It's going to be lovely!

  4. Ditto on the making more blocks suggestion. My eye goes right to the polka dot fabric at the bottom. I think it's just too different from the rest of the fabrics. What a cute quilt, though!!

  5. That's a pretty quilt, Vicki! I love the happy colors, and the blocks are a fun design, too. I have the same issue with the quilt I'm putting together that's in my post today. It's square, and I ran out of background fabric to make more blocks. I'm thinking I'll add a narrow side border and larger top and bottom to make it rectangular. (If I can find just the right border, lol!)

  6. Hi Vicki! That cuc vine is so funny! I can't wait to see if you get any produce from it. I like option #2 with the 2" border, just to keep it consistent with the other sashing. I also like the suggestions of finding a way for another row Dog gone it, it's a dilemma. I didn't expect you to post today but I thanks you for do so and linking up today. ~smile~ Roseanne

  7. Your plus quilt looks great. What don't you like about square quilts? I think that a 51" x 51" quilt is a really versatile size, either for a baby quilt (great to lay down on the floor for "tummy time" or to tuck around a little one in a car seat or stroller), a wall hanging, or even as a cheerful table topper for a round or square table. But it doesn't matter at all what I think since it's your quilt! You know, there is no law that says the borders have to go on all four sides of a quilt. Especially with this kind of modern design, if you want it to be a rectangle it would look really cute with the skinny background fabric border all the way around, then a skinny (but a little wider) bright contrasting border top and bottom only (red?), and then your wide gray polka dot fabric border, also top and bottom only. When it was finished, no one would ever know that wasn't your intention all along!

  8. I would definitely do #2 to get that sashing "finished off" on the edges before the border--but that is my personal preference. It will be pretty either way!

  9. I definitely recognize that quilt, Vicki!!! That is so cute, especially with the dot background fabric!!! I love option 2--that makes such a perky border! Your flowers are looking peak! We have several volunteer vines in our pots, too, from the compost addition. We're thinking melons, but we'll wait and see! I'm sending Quilter Bonnie over to see your quilt now, too!

  10. This is a fun quilt, and I'm wishing I had some of that fabric so you could finish another row - you know I'd buzz it right over if I did. I do like Rebecca's suggestion, though. Option 2 is good too. I know you'll come up with a great solution!

  11. I agree with Rebecca that adding a stripe of something coordinating on top and bottom would bring it up to a nice sized rectangle and then you can add your borders to finish it up. I used to dislike square quilts, but they are growing on me :)

  12. I like the white border plus the wider second border. It helps the blocks float and then frames it.

  13. So many excellent suggestions in the comments for your very colorful, and pretty, quilt. I look forward to seeing what you decide.

  14. Your quilt really caught my eye in my reading list. Can't wait to see how it gets finished. LOVE your gorgeous flowers. Woohoo!

  15. These colors cane be easily found and replicated from your stash. You could make more blocks to make it rectangular. There is so much joy in this!!! I am sure it will make a kid squeal with delight. Hope you are staying safe.
