I used batiks, but you certainly don't have to. In fact, I really need to make another with regular quilting cottons.
This is a quick easy pattern to whip up. There are 8 pages of instructions which include pictures of the steps.
This is the Island Batik one I did a couple weeks ago. They are just so fun to make and quilt!
