The hubster and I were road tripping this week. We went to Elkhart, Indiana with our fifth wheel. Going through Chicago was not fun, but we went through on Memorial day so there was no rush hour going on at least. And we went through yesterday after the morning rush hour. The reason to go was to get a new suspension on the fifth wheel and disk brakes, then of course new tires were also needed. We could stay on the Mor Ryde campus Monday night as they had electric hookups. Then they worked on the camper on Tuesday so we had to be out of it so we went to Ligonier, IN to Zinck's fabric. I had a little fun getting a few pieces of fabric there. Next we went on to Shipshewana, IN. That was fun to see all the Amish buggies coming and going, a lot of them were on bicycles too, some were Mennonites. There we visited Yoders Department store, this photo is the side of their building with lots of barn quilts. Inside was two quilt shops, a very large hardware store, and a clothing store.

One of the quilt shops had soooo much fabric, I enjoyed petting a lot of it, LOL. We also walked the flea market there and visited the bulk grocery store. Another quilt shop stop was Lollies, OMG a ton more fabric to pet!! This was in mall type building with three floors and several businesses in it. There was also a store with just Minky in it-I didn't remember to go in it after being in Lollies! Come back on Monday and I will show you what all I bought at the shops.
After returning to the fifth wheel at the end of Tuesday we could stay in the camper that night too. However it was still in the building so we camped indoors! There were two other campers and their owners in there too so we had a chat fest with them that evening. Wednesday we had to get out of there again so we went to the RV Museum in Elkhart. That was fun to see some of the first campers ever made. The first one we came to was actually a covered wagon... I had never thought of them as a camper!
Another early days camper
A line of some from the 40s and 50s.
A very small Airstream!
I think this was inside the Airstream. It was just fun to see all the different years and how things have evolved.

Our camper was all fixed and ready to go on Wednesday afternoon. So we pulled out to a campground for the night. At the plant there was a train track across the road and we heard whistles and train noise all night long and hardly got any sleep. The campground was very quiet and we slept great! Thursday morning we headed for home but stopped at the Indiana Dunes National park and walked down to Lake Michigan and did a little hike before hitting the road. It was a long day but we were glad to get back home. If you read to the bottom of this, I appreciate you! I just thought you would want to know why I hadn't posted all week! Now I need to get back into the sewing room and unload the camper, which won't take long as we didn't take much for the four day trip.
Hope to see ya here again on Monday! In the meantime lets go get some more inspiration at these linky parties...
Some of my favorite places. Love Yoders and Lollie's. Not to mention the Dunes, for some great outdoor time!
ReplyDeleteDH and I go there often - Ligonier is 1 hr drive. we love the diner called The Charger which has fabulous fish dinner !! It is at the intersection where Zinks is located. I do mostly charity quilts, so Zinks is a favorite stop.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a fun adventure! Petting fabric and visiting new places is always a good time.
ReplyDeleteOh that sounds like so much fun! Petting fabric is the best - I can't wait to see your haul, er your purchases. :D The camping part sounds fun too. I loved Indiana when we visited Columbus and Brown County. I wanted badly to move there, but Hubs said um, no - too cold. Glad you got your RV all out of the way and had fun doing other things in the meantime. The RV museum sounds like a blast. Mom and Daddy had good friends who did nothing but travel in their Airstream after he retired. I loved hearing about Mary Ileen and LT's adventures - lol!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun road trip to me! The little red and white camper in the one photo looks like the one my folks had, only theirs was yellow and white. We went on just ONE trip with it - to northern Minnesota for a week. My mother hated every minute of that trip but dad and I had a blast. It sat in the backyard next to the garage for about 15 years and got used fairly often as a "guest room". But never left the yard again until dad sold it. LOL
ReplyDeleteHow fun! I haven't been to Shipshewana in years. I knew a lot of trailers are built in Elkhart, but didn't know there is a museum.
ReplyDeleteHi Vicki! What a fun adventure. It all sounds a blast. One whole shop of just Minky?!! I can't even imagine that. Looking forward to seeing what you purchased. It sounds like we need to recreate that road trip. We go to the Indiana Dunes often, and Four Winds in New Buffalo, Michigan which is very closeby. And good timing on going through Chicago!! That is the rub for all road trips for us. We cannot go anywhere without going through Chicago except for up north. We could go up and around Lake Michigan . . . and have. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
ReplyDeleteAh, that trip sounds a lot like when we take the Airstream to Ohio for service. Can't wait to see all of our haul on Monday!
ReplyDeleteWhat a neat museum. I can’t wait to see what you picked up!!
ReplyDeleteyour experience at the campground by the railroad tracks sounds like one we stayed at once - I got no sleep the camper would shake half the night it seemed and the whistles so loud! even with ear plugs I could hear and Mike slept through the whole thing!! I have heard of Shipshewana, IN of course and the stores there but I have never been there - I guess one reason was because my late sister in law lived close by and if we had went we need to see her and my husband and she didn't get a long well and so he never wanted to go in that area. Maybe now that she is no longer there? I will need to see I have wanted to for a long time.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you mixed business with pleasure and had fun! Visiting a famous fabric shop would be on my road trip list, too. Looking forward to seeing what you brought home!
ReplyDeleteThe campers from the 40's and 50's are so cute!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great week you had. Reading about the fabulous quilt stores there made me wonder why I never visited any of them! Daughter went to IU and we drove to visit her a couple of times and when we dropped her off or picked her up. NEVER even thought about it. I'm looking forward to seeing what goodies you found there. Thanks for sharing the museum too. Fun to see the older campers. Nice tease for the new fabrics. I'll be back!
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a fun trip! all those quilt blocks are amazing -
ReplyDeleteYou two came up with a fun way to kill time while waiting for repairs! I'd like to have tagged along at the quilt shops! I have never thought of a covered wagon as a camper, but I guess it was?!
ReplyDeleteWell, that is an interesting trip! Fun to see all the old campers, and visit the quilt shops.
