Finishes for the New Year

I am starting the New Year off right with 3 finishes-well technically they were finished in the last couple days of 2016. However, they will count toward my 2017 donation quilts.

A couple weeks ago I was digging around in my big stash of older fabrics. I really would like to get some of it used up.  They are from my bunny, doll, and bear making days for craft shows in the late 80's and 90's.  Ya think I might have over bought on those colors-well you'd be right!!  Well who would have thought they would be out of style in 26 years, LOL   Hmmm if I hung onto them long enough they'd be back in style, perhaps, hehe.

My friend, Jasmine, who blogs at Quilt Kisses came up with the Chunky Race quilts. And let me tell you these are fun, and oh so fast!!  I used 4" x 18" strips and used 49 of them, like Shannon did, in two of them. BUT the first one, I forgot to take out the 3 to add to the top when it was all pieced, and then I had a bit wider quilt, so I added a row to the top and bottom.

Freehand allover feather quilting.

A different feather freehand allover.

Can you tell I am having fun going through some quilting designs I have not done for a while. This is another fun all over design using a lettuc leaf feather.

And in the effort to use up even more of these blue and mauve older fabrics, I pieced the backs just enough to get them done!
And just so you know how crazy I am, I still have lots of blue and mauve fabrics to go through. I did cut for another Chunky Race quilt. Also 5" strips to make my own charms and I still have leftovers! I might not get through it all this year as I do want to move onto other colors, but I sure made a nice dent in that tub!  For older fabrics I think they made up really nice into these Chunky Race quilts.

The third pair of hand knit socks have been started.  Ramona alerted me to a one day sale on this Drops Fabel print yarn.  I immediately ordered 2 color ways since I had been wanting to try this self striping yarn. Fun!!!

I feel like I am off to a great start for 2017, how about you?  Happy New Year to all of you and thank you for reading my blog and for comments you leave, I appreciate you so much!

  1. You are right - those are definitely 80s colors, but so pretty! I should give that a try myself, cutting the 4 x 18 strips. They do look like a perfect way to practice some fun quilting, too!

  6. Three lovely finishes! And yes, they may be old-ish fabrics, but really only those of us who quilt know that, and it's so great to move some of that stash!

  10. Wonderful start to 2017! It takes me months just to finish one!! I was wondering what I should do with the fabric that is outdated and this is a great to go about it.

  11. My bedroom growing up had wall paper in these exact colors. I loved seeing your take on the chunky race quilts and your feather variations. I love these quilts for stashbusting for a good cause.

  12. People decorate their homes in all sorts of colors, and I'm sure these will be perfect for someone. There's a reason they were so popular, they are soft and pretty!

I really like the idea of a "chunky race," too. That's the kind of race I would enter if I was a runner, so it seems appropriate for my quilting, too :)

  16. What a great way to use up outdated fabric colors! What is the finished size of the quilts. Think I will have to make one or two or more.
