Scraps and a jelly roll

Ahhhh, something I could do just because...

So I had started making strip blocks with my red scraps during one of our camping trips last year.  Then set it aside and it got buried kinda deep:0  This past week I found myself with some free time and thought of these and decided to see how many I had gotten done before.  Not many, haha.  So I decided this would be a good first project on my featherweight that I bought a few months ago. I had lots of red strips already cut in 10" lengths of many different widths.  I just grabbed and sewed.  So enjoyable!  Then I trimmed them into 9.5" sqs since I had the 9.5" square ruler.  The corners are 2.5" cut sqs and using the sew, flip and cut method I quickly added those to the red squares.  The sashings are cut 2" wide.  Lots of scraps used up in this 2 color quilt.  So a UFO becomes a flimsy.

And then I gave myself permission to start a whole new quilt using the above 2 jelly rolls.  These have 20 strips in each roll and I got them for $10 each!  Score!  I am loving the look I am getting.  So fun starting a new project, I decided not to be so hard on myself this next year.  Yes I have lots of UFO's but I am giving myself permission to do whatever pleases me this next year.  And if that means starting another new project that's OK!!!   So how about you, what are you going to work on for the New Year?

Speaking of New Year, I am also starting a new quilt on New Years Day too.  Fellow blog friend, Roseanne, who blogs at Home sewn by us, is having a sew along for the Regatta quilt pattern by Daniela O'Connell from Block M Quilts.  More info on Roseanne's blog.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and hoping you will get everything you wanted!

  1. Love your red and white quilt! So pretty! Those jelly rolls look like they'll turn into something fun, too. I'm with you, Vicki - I don't worry too much about starting something new with UFOs still hanging around. It's so fun and relaxing to do what you enjoy!

  2. Finally some "you get to choose" sewing time! I had some of that yesterday too. It was nice! I also spent some time going through some of my fabric piles and cleaning up a bit. I'm doing Roseanne's quilt along too!

  3. Beautiful quilt Vicki and I agree that sometimes it is so much fun to dig out a UFO and start working on it again! What a great pattern for using up scraps also. Merry Christmas my friend!

  4. Oh, I'm so glad you did something just for you! You have certainly earned it. The red quilt is very cute, and you'll have it all done in time for Valentine's Day. I thought about hopping into the Regatta, but was too late I think. I'm still thinking through my next year goals (I'm not a goal setter). Enjoy your Christmas, Vicki!

    1. Hi Wendy,
It's not too late for the Regatta! It starts on January 1 but there is no hard deadline . . . so no pressure. We'd love for you to join us if you're interested . . . but no pressure there either. Merry Christmas. ~smile~ Roseanne

  6. I love all of your reds! And your jelly rolls are beautiful, too. I’ve made a list of things I’ve started or bought fabric to make and am determined to finish or make at least half of the things on this list in 2018. We shall see! Looking forward to seeing what you create in 2018.

  7. Hi Vicki,
Oh how I love your red and white quilt! It looks like a bunch of pretty red ornaments, and those little cornerstones are the perfect touch. I'm going to PIN this so I remember this inspiration in the future. Thanks for the shout out for the Regatta Quilt. It will be starting before you know it. Merry Christmas, my friend. We have a gentle little snow failing right now so we will have a white Christmas. ~smile~ Roseanne

  8. Like Roseanne, I'm going to save the photo of your red scrappy quilt because I just love it! I'm glad you're giving yourself permission to do what calls you. After working so hard on your holiday craft fair projects, it's time for a little Vicki time :) And I think it's fine to have some UFOs because you just never know when an older project will suddenly be THE ONE you want to work on.

  11. I love what you have done with your red strips. Who would have thought that by just adding a flip and sew corner turns the blocks from ordinary to something special. Thanks for the idea.

  14. Great idea to turn those squares into circles, well, almost circles. :-) As satisfying as it is to get a quilt out of scraps for 'nothing', it's even more satisfying at times to start a brand new project isn't it?
