Blue and Mauve scraps

 Yes I still have blue and mauve scraps lingering in my stash. These are leftovers from the days I used to make bunnies, country dolls etc. Little by little I am trying to use those fabrics up. Making donation quilts is a good way to do that. 

This may look like the popular jelly roll race quilt. However these strips were cut into 4" wide pieces. And I cut and sewed row by row instead. 

I kept the size around 41" so  it would fit on a 44" fabric and I was able to use more scraps for the backing.  You might wonder if I used up all the blue and mauve scraps, the answer is NOT! But at least I used some, LOL.  A quick allover stipple on the longarm and a blue binding and this quilt is ready to donate.  It's a hot and humid weekend here so it's a good day to stay inside with AC and quilt away:)

Scrappy Brick Finish

The scrappy brick flimsy is now a full fledged quilt! A quick all over larger stipple  on the longarm made this move along fast. A tan Signature thread called Mother Goose was used. I finished it off with a burgundy print binding. 

The backing was a pre printed panel that I cut apart and added the larger strips of tan muslin in two vertical rows and one horizontal row in the middle to make it big enough. 

The panel was given to me a few years ago, I am glad to finally have put it to good use.  I was pleased to see I was able to come very close to centering the top on the backing. This is donation quilt #four for 2025

The other scrappy project has moved along also. The blocks are all made, now it is time to sew them all together. The two borders have been planned also. It's good to use some scraps-it's like making a free quilt, almost!

UFO moved to a flimsy

I am feeling the satisfaction of bringing a UFO to the flimsy stage.  It all began by cutting bricks from scraps last November. Such satisfaction, don't you agree?

For the neutral squares I did end up using a bit of yardage. And soon I had two strips pieced. Shortly after that I put it aside...

Until a few days ago when I wanted it off my design wall. I had a little conversation with myself that I should just sew up more strips first. I only needed three more strips and I could end up with a UFO crossing the flimsy finish line. But wait that would be a smaller top than I wanted. So into the stash for some solid blue for sashing strips and a little outer border. Ahhh satisfaction! Quilting will ensue at a later date as I am just in a piecing mood right now.

Blue and Green scrappy squares

These blue and green scrappy squares were started in 2019  and little by little more were added. 

And sashings were attached. And then they sat for a long time.

After finishing the piecing on Two Bits I decided to see how many blue and green blocks were made and where I left off with the progress of them. I was happy to find there were three rows waiting to be sewn together. More blocks had their sashings already attached too. With only needing to make 6 blocks it quickly became a flimsy!

The tan and brown were yardage while all the blue and green 2.5" squares are all from the scrappy string bin. By looking at it one would think it used a lot of scraps. Not really, just a small stack of squares is all it took!

Our dark purple iris are opening, in person they are super dark. I caught this one with the sun shining on it so it shows more color. We counted over 20 buds on it. 

Well what do you think I should do next-more scrappy UFO's or a table runner for the shop?

H2H check in

The Hands2Help or H2H is well underway for this year, this is hosted by the lovely Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict.  Today is our first check in to see how we are doing with this years challenge. I have posted each of these quilts individually before but grouping them together for the sake of the check in.

Scrappy Tumbler

 It's a scrappy tumbler finish! These tumblers were leftover from previous tumbler quilts and in an effort to cut down on UFO's I finished it up.

Trying something different to calm down the busy tumblers by adding the solid blue sashing between rows.

I love working with the bright fabric for a child's quilt. Especially on Minnesota winter days. Although the days have been kinder to us the past week with temps touching 40 some days. I won't complain much about our weather after seeing all the destruction in the south and the crazy amounts of snow out west. My heart goes out to those who have lost everything and to the families of loved ones lost.

I used a solid light blue fleece for the backing and no batting for this one. This leaves the quilt very squishy and cuddly especially since I just quilted it with an all over meander. This quilt will head to the H2H (Hands 2 Help) donation pile, that makes 2 so far.  More on the horizon:)

A little Scrappy UFO

 

In the closet with the rest of my UFO's I found these 8.5" square strip blocks. And get this, I even had left myself a little drawing of what these were for, LOL.  Seriously I need to do this more often as I pulled out several other UFO's that had no notes, that is frustrating. 

  

The plan was to snowball the corners with 2.5" squares. I even had the background fabric stored with these blocks!

I was able to quickly cut my background squares with the Accuquilt multiple 2.5" square die. At six layers thick I cut 54 squares in one pass.  After that I finished a couple blocks to see how they would look.

The next day I whipped through the green and gold and here is what I have so far. Oh how good it feels to work on a scrappy UFO!

The machine knitting of hats continued through out the week, here are the results of that.

Scrappy bits

Thursday I declared a play day in the sewing room, I could choose to do anything I wanted.  Most days I am sewing/quilting something to put in my Etsy shop.  So Wednesday night I looked and looked through my pins on Pinterest and in my quilt downloaded patterns etc. Just waiting for something to jump out at me that begged to be made. By the time I went to bed I still hadn't figured out what that would be.  I wanted it figured out so I could just jump in and do it in the morning.  Thursday came around and while having coffee and browsing the internet again it hit me...I have been wanting to start one of Cynthia's Two Bits quilts scrappy style.  

Here is my design wall as of Thursday night. Eight scrappy gorgeous blocks done!  I love them!  There will be more joining them, sometime. No hurry to finish it so I'll take my time and when I need a break from the every day sewing I will make a few more.  But gosh it was so fun!!  Now I just need to find my bright orange and yellow bags of scraps:0

Scraps and a jelly roll

Ahhhh, something I could do just because...

So I had started making strip blocks with my red scraps during one of our camping trips last year.  Then set it aside and it got buried kinda deep:0  This past week I found myself with some free time and thought of these and decided to see how many I had gotten done before.  Not many, haha.  So I decided this would be a good first project on my featherweight that I bought a few months ago. I had lots of red strips already cut in 10" lengths of many different widths.  I just grabbed and sewed.  So enjoyable!  Then I trimmed them into 9.5" sqs since I had the 9.5" square ruler.  The corners are 2.5" cut sqs and using the sew, flip and cut method I quickly added those to the red squares.  The sashings are cut 2" wide.  Lots of scraps used up in this 2 color quilt.  So a UFO becomes a flimsy.

And then I gave myself permission to start a whole new quilt using the above 2 jelly rolls.  These have 20 strips in each roll and I got them for $10 each!  Score!  I am loving the look I am getting.  So fun starting a new project, I decided not to be so hard on myself this next year.  Yes I have lots of UFO's but I am giving myself permission to do whatever pleases me this next year.  And if that means starting another new project that's OK!!!   So how about you, what are you going to work on for the New Year?

A chunky race for H2H

This is my final quilt for the H2H challenge over at Sarah's .  This week is the 'show off' week so we can all see what the others have accomplished. And wow there is a whole lot of quilts being shown!! Congrats to everyone that is participating.

I did several of these chunky race quilts with my older blue and mauve stash earlier this year. This one got cut out and not sewn back then, so I hurried this week and got it done just in time.  The idea of the chunky race quilt comes from my friend Jasmine.  A very quick and easy quilt to make.

This blue and Mauve one didn't make it into the pile of quilts as it wasn't finished at the time I took the pic.  But it makes 12 quilts that I worked on during the H2H time.   All along I thought I was going to deliver them all to the local Project Linus. However, I just got wind recently that our local Crisis Nursery Center was very low on quilts.  So I loaded up my SUV and delivered them there.  The gal was tickled pink, and I was so happy to help out. 

In addition to the 12 H2H quilts I also gave them this stack of 21 quilts, that I made over the winter, for a total of 33!!!  I am so very happy to have them out to where they can get given and used.  It gave me 33 warm fuzzy feelings :)   I set a personal goal of 30 quilts to make for donations this year, I surpassed my goal and I am so happy.  These are all various sizes from 36x36 to a lap size.  My closet is so much emptier!

One RSC16 flimsy

I had pedal to the medal yesterday and moved one of my RSC16 projects into the flimsy category! Square quilts are not my thing unless they are on my wall, and this one was square so what should I do. Of course add a top and bottom border and in the process use more scraps-a win win! The pattern for the blocks is on Moda Bake Shop-Tropical Punch.

I am really liking how it came out, so this is what I am crushing on this week. Since it is a donation quilt I will keep the quilting simple for next months finish!  It measures about 44x55.  At this point I am thinking scrappy binding, but we'll see when it is time.

A weekend accomplishment!

I have been planning on getting this quilt done since the summer of 2012 and here is the top all sewn. That summer I went on a local shop hop and if you completed the passport you received this bundle of half yard cuts of Bella solids. The pattern is a freebie at Moda Bake Shop called Puzzle Quilt. Love how it came out, it will hang in our family room when I get it quilted-hopefully in January. There was lots of fabric left from this bundle so I picked out another Moda Bake Shop pattern to work up someday.

I am so enjoying my free sewing time right now, so onto the next projects-keep checking back as I have more posts in the works :-)  Hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season!

Quilting, quilting, quilting!!

These stack and whack style blocks have been percolating in the back of the closet for 6 years probably! They were supposed to be a vest way back when, and now I think what an ugly vest that would be, so I turned it into a quit to be donated.

This is a strippy tumbler quilt, a fun one to piece using leftover strings, and fun to quilt with freehand ferns.

Whew I am really tired tonight, but I did manage to get a lot done today. Finished up this string tumbler that I started a week or more ago. Yesterday I had a friend over and she started one and I worked more on this. Finished it up this morning. The inspiration for this quilt came from http://www.maryquilts.com/strings/string-tumblers/ Thanks Mary. It's an awesome way to use leftovers from other projects.

So yep it's been a long time ago that I started this blog and have not kept up to date as you can well see, LOL. And I hate blogs that do that, go figure!

I have been keeping busy so far this year with piecing several quilt tops for charity in Jan. and I went to a wonderful quilt retreat, had so much fun with friends. This month, I am trying to get lots of those quilt tops quilted and bound and maybe even out the door. Here are a few pic's of some.
