Colorful Design Wall

 By the end of Wednesday this is what my design wall looked like. I love the splash of color!

Sunday was a quick finish by binding the plaid donation quilt. I used a tan birdhouse fabric and another tan for the backing.

A large stipple to keep it soft for cuddles. 

Monday I quilted this D9P(disappearing nine patch). During the week before I worked on piecing it in between other projects. A few of the nine patches were put together and then I got busy sewing the rest together and before long I had a flimsy. Working away at the mound of blue from the 90s and making a donation quilt is very satisfying. This makes #6 for this year. 

In the nine patch I placed the lighter blues on the corners, a light print with blue hearts in the very center and the rest are 4 navy blue. For some reason these squares were cut at 4.5", no idea why!!

Look at what I used for the backing! These 4 panel squares of birds were given to me in a pile of other fabrics including the blue stripe here.  So I combined then for the backing.

Wednesday I pieced all three of the pieces you see on the first photo of this post. Most of the parts were already cut out so it was fast piecing and then leaf blocks were all pieced too. The colorful squares for their borders were all strip pieced and I used my 2.5" strip cutter to cut them into sections. 

Thursday I quilted the square one, got the photos and listed it in my shop.

I'll be quilting the other two soon.

Our apple tree looks like it had Christmas ornaments the way the apples were hanging on this one side of the tree!

UFO and new starts

 I snuck a donation UFO quilt in the quilting queue and got it finished up and folded away. It will be given to my DIL later this year for her group to hand out. This makes the third so far this year. Many more to come I hope, there are a few more tops in the pile waiting their turn.

The tumbler flimsy was pieced over the winter. 

Somewhere along the line I put this wide stripe in the donation fabric tub. It was the perfect size for this  48x60 lap quilt. 

My design wall has wall hangings in progress...

And the piecing is done now.  All parts of four different panels leftover from previous projects. Sometimes the panels just have too many pieces that I don't want to put all into one item.

Two finishes

 Do you ever feel like you should have gotten more done for the week? Even though I have two finishes I felt like I didn't have the energy/motivation that I usually do. I can't even blame it on the heat as we had a couple of really nice days. Granted these two finishes are larger than I normally do. 

First was this scrappy orange pineapple quilt which I pieced over the winter. Quilted it on Saturday and bound it Tuesday, by machine of course. This will be put aside until fall when we see our son and DIL and I will give to her for her church group to hand out to someone in need in their community. This marks the second donation quilt done for the year.

When searching through my donation fabrics I had a hard time finding anything that would go with orange. This one has gold/orange fruit and that was as close as I could get. 

A quick meander seemed right, get it done and with a larger design the quilt remains more cuddly. I used a poly batting on the thinner side so it didn't get to poofy. 

Sunday I pinned this quilt on the frame and quilted it with a freehand feather design on Sunday morning and Monday in between doing other things. We went for a bike ride on Sunday afternoon, after that I didn't do anything! Wednesday I got the binding on and had it's photo shoot on Thursday. 

Also pieced over the winter using a Jelly Roll that I had won a while back. I used a brown for the binding

Picked up that backing from Hobby Lobby when it was on sale. The pattern for the quilt is from Missouri Star called Sticks and Stones. I was inspired to make this quilt after seeing one Melva had made. Mine has made it's way into my Etsy shop.

There are so many fall things I want to get made in the next two weeks and get them listed in my Etsy shop.  So I need to get motivated somehow and soon! The first thing is to see if I have a backing for that leaf quilt or can make a scrappy one.

Here are a few peeks of pretty blooms in our yard. Garden Phlox in different shades of purple and a white peeking out here and there. They are in the fenced garden area. 

These are in a pot on the deck. Aren't the reddish orange and yellows so pretty. I forget their name. And the purples are so dainty.

Can't forget the purple coneflowers on the south side of the house.

Green and Blue scrappiness

It all started with charms I cut from my blue scrap stash and green scrappy four patches with a constant white tone on tone. While on the transformation of my sewing room I also needed a couple days of sewing. I decided to work on this WIP which I had cut out last fall and pieced most of the four patches. It was patiently waiting for it's sewing time again. 

It was a plus that I now have a bigger design wall;)  Not much time was involved in laying it all out. Sewing commenced right after. And before long a scrappy flimsy was born! It is a small lap size that is destined to be a donation quilt and will now take it's place in the 'to be quilted' pile. Even though it was only a small pile of fabric used up it felt great to move this WIP along. The pattern was a freebie called Spring Lake Quilt from Tilda's World.

The bee balm is really showing off this year. 

The dahlia's are off to a good start with promises of many more blooms.

 

Jelly Roll quilt

 I am tickled to have another UFO finish to share with you. Things have just aligned right for me to finish up several quilts that have been waiting, some longer than others. This one is going on two years old I think. It sat patiently waiting to be quilted and bound so it could go give someone a quilty hug. 

The pattern is Ridiculously Easy Jelly Roll quilt by Michelle at From Bolt to Beauty It really is easy and fun to make. The backing is fleece given to me by a friend so I thought it fitting to use it in a donation quilt. An allover stipple kept it soft. The pattern says 58x70 for a lap quilt, I forgot to measure before folding it up and putting in the pile. The batiks were from a very long time ago, I was going to make a quilted jacket out of it but as time went on I knew I didn't want to make another jacket. So into a quilt it went and I am glad to have this done.

We had tornado sirens go off twice yesterday afternoon, we personally didn't see any activity. However we did get over 3" of rain, it's still coming down lightly. 

I am glad I snapped this photo of my Calla Lilies the day before as they are now drooping with the rain.

And Wednesday morning I was greeted by these cuties! They are only a few feet from the front of our house. They are cute but darn it when they eat our lilies and hostas I am not so fond of them then!

Blue and Mauve scraps

 Yes I still have blue and mauve scraps lingering in my stash. These are leftovers from the days I used to make bunnies, country dolls etc. Little by little I am trying to use those fabrics up. Making donation quilts is a good way to do that. 

This may look like the popular jelly roll race quilt. However these strips were cut into 4" wide pieces. And I cut and sewed row by row instead. 

I kept the size around 41" so  it would fit on a 44" fabric and I was able to use more scraps for the backing.  You might wonder if I used up all the blue and mauve scraps, the answer is NOT! But at least I used some, LOL.  A quick allover stipple on the longarm and a blue binding and this quilt is ready to donate.  It's a hot and humid weekend here so it's a good day to stay inside with AC and quilt away:)

Criss Cross

Criss Cross three yard quilt is a free pattern from Wood Valley Designs. This has actually been done for a month but I just haven't been able to get decent photos. The colors just are not true to what they really are. In real life the ones that appear yellow are a yellow green, the pink is really brighter, the blue is teal and bit darker than in the photos. The background is the only one true in color!

 Freehand flower swirl made for a quick and cuddly quilt at 41x52. I am now up to six quilts of various sizes for donation. They will go to my DIL's church group to hand out to those who need a snuggle with a quilt.  It makes me happy to be able to make and give these away. There are at least four more in progress. My goal is twelve for the year.

A string finish

Oh but it feels so good to be getting some of these quilts quilted and bound. Over the winter I pieced this one and it made it over the finish line this past week. Then I had to wait to take photos as the weather didn't want to cooperate.

Phone book pages were used to piece the strings to. Using a jeans needle and a small stitch length makes for easier tearing the paper off.

A large stipple sped up the quilting process a lot, it also keeps the quilt a bit softer.

So thankful for friends that give me fabric for my donation quilts, in this case the backing.

Want to see some pretty peonies? Oh I am sure you do;) This is what they looked like just a week ago. We started counting the buds, upwards of 200 on there!!!

Scrappy Brick Finish

The scrappy brick flimsy is now a full fledged quilt! A quick all over larger stipple  on the longarm made this move along fast. A tan Signature thread called Mother Goose was used. I finished it off with a burgundy print binding. 

The backing was a pre printed panel that I cut apart and added the larger strips of tan muslin in two vertical rows and one horizontal row in the middle to make it big enough. 

The panel was given to me a few years ago, I am glad to finally have put it to good use.  I was pleased to see I was able to come very close to centering the top on the backing. This is donation quilt #four for 2025

The other scrappy project has moved along also. The blocks are all made, now it is time to sew them all together. The two borders have been planned also. It's good to use some scraps-it's like making a free quilt, almost!

What's on the design wall

Here is what is on my design wall-at least for a few more days. I had some free time and decided to bring out my featherweight for some mindless sewing. 

These began as string strips. 

Next I let my 12" Accuquilt cube companion set do the cutting of this shape. After I get a bunch I will add triangles to the two corners. No rhyme or reason as to the strips I use, it's grab and sew. 

When I tired of that I finished up this little quilt.  It's about 40" square. I used the kite shape from 12" Accuquilt cube. The blocks were all pieced in December and assembled recently. 

I was happy to find just the right size and color fabric for the backing.  This makes donation quilt # three finished for this year.
