UFO and new starts

 I snuck a donation UFO quilt in the quilting queue and got it finished up and folded away. It will be given to my DIL later this year for her group to hand out. This makes the third so far this year. Many more to come I hope, there are a few more tops in the pile waiting their turn.

The tumbler flimsy was pieced over the winter. 

Somewhere along the line I put this wide stripe in the donation fabric tub. It was the perfect size for this  48x60 lap quilt. 

My design wall has wall hangings in progress...

And the piecing is done now.  All parts of four different panels leftover from previous projects. Sometimes the panels just have too many pieces that I don't want to put all into one item.

Autumn Greetings

 It's no secret I love working with panels, sometimes choosing parts of one and parts of another to make something new.

For this wall hanging I chose the Autumn Greetings section first.  

Next came the pinwheels which are 4" finished for each pinwheel, more orange sashing was added to the top and bottom of the pinwheel units.

That is when I searched through my panel parts to see if anything would look good with what I had so far. That yielded the leaves and acorns rectangle. I had to trim it a bit to fit. Next was putting these three parts together and surrounding it all with orange sashing.

Then came the gold/neutral squares, green border and finally the beautiful orange with metallic gold leave border. After quilting it I went in search of a binding that might coordinate as I didn't have enough of the orange leaf fabric for that.  I might have squealed a little when I discovered the perfect stripe with metallic gold accent in just the right color in my stash! 

The backing with the folded triangle hanging tabs.  This piece was snatched up shortly after I listed it.  That just means I need to move forward with another fall panel:)

My coneflowers are blooming nicely this year, this one was unique in it's downward petals that I thought he deserved a photo.

Summer and Fall

 Hello Summer is a cross stitch from Primrose Cottage, love their designs. Diann and I had been talking of what to stitch next, she mentioned she was going to do this one and I thought it is the perfect timing. So I jumped in fingers first:)  A week ago I picked out the thread and then Monday started stitching and every night since except for last night. I only stitch in the evenings while watching TV.

During the day time I sew.  I figure it is time to work up a few fall panels for the shop.

And the current one I am working on.  I'll go into more detail about each when I get them quilted.

Fall sewing

 Whoa September where did you come from, you sure snuck up on me!!  Are you all ready for the new month? I am sorta I guess, mixed feelings for summer to end, but at the same time I look forward to decorating for fall! One more panel made up.

This is almost an exact duplicate of one I have done in the past which makes for a pretty fast make.

With a wall hanging that is not to big I like to attach a split sleeve so that one only has to put one nail in the wall.

Friday one of our grandsons came over and he and I made nine more potato chip blocks and then I sewed them up into a flimsy. I had stacks of 2.5"x4.5" bricks cut, he loves picking out which ones go into a block. I also taught him how to press, we make a good team!  After we were done he and grandpa enjoyed some time together.  After dinner we played some games and we took him home Saturday. 

This week I have two table runners to make for a customer, finish up another leaf runner and make another Scrappy Jack I hope!  What all do you have on your list for the week?

Window box

This window box panel wasn't being kind to me. So many of you tell me that I am so good with working with panels, and I appreciate that!  But this one kicked me in the behind, LOL.  I had a really hard time with the border, I so wanted it to have this border style. I picked fabric colors that should have brought out the colors within the panel itself. But the border just laid there and did nothing and believe me I tried interviewing different fabrics both in the print and the color. Nope it wasn't having anything to do with that. 

So in the end it became this...

This panel had been in the stash a while and I was determined to use it up:)

It finished at 30"x 45.5".

We had a wonderful weekend, our 13 yr old grandson was here for a two night sleepover. We played games, got the boat in the water for the first time this year. Did some archery, played more card games and just had a good time. While we love having all the kids here, it was so enjoyable just having one on one time with him.  I hope you had a great weekend also, did you do something special? 

 

I hope to quilt another panel this week, but also will be spending time kitting up a few projects for the next weeks sewing.

Wheelbarrow full of pumpkins

Believe me I am not trying to rush summer, I am just trying to get items ready for the fall shopping. Lots of people shop early so they have the item in hand when they want to decorate.  This panel was an easy one to whip up as I had done it before, the design worked so I kept it the same.

Checkerboards that finish at one inch, and three inch finished HST's bring this fall themed panel to life.

For HST's (half square triangles) I like to use a ruler when quilting to get an even curve.  Ruler work does take more time but it's worth it to me.  A ruler was also used to cross hatch the checkerboards.

The loops in the the green border and the hook swirl on the panel itself are all freehand and quick to do. 

This wall hanging came out at 29.5" x 39.5" and is now listed in my Etsy shop.

And to show you I am still enjoying summer...a few flowers that have been in bloom at our house. The bleeding heart has come and gone but I forgot to post it.

These super dark purple iris have such big blooms, there were 16 blossoms this year, they just finished. 

The calla lilies didn't grow as tall as they normally do, and the one yellow one has not shown itself yet either.  They had about 20 blooms this year and are still showing us their beauty.

These peonies went crazy this year with around 100 posies! Three years ago hubby transplanted them to this open, full of sunshine, area and they are loving it! 

It's gonna be a warm one today so I hope you stay cool.  I'll be out to lunch with a friend today, but in between that I hope to kit up a bunch of table runners.  Have a great weekend everyone!!

Harvest Gathering

Sometimes panels have lots of little pictures on them. And I don't necessarily want to use everything that comes on that panel in one wall hanging.  So I just cut them apart and use what I want and worry about the rest later.  You might remember seeing the in progress post about this HERE.  I originally thought I was going to use two more blocks below the house section. But when I got that far I decided it would be a bigger wall hanging that I wanted it to be. 

Harvest Gathering is from one panel and the house from a second panel and the leaf and pumpkin are from a third panel. These all were the leftovers;)

I then added some borders of various colors/fabrics before adding the flying geese and checkerboard elements. A good place to use up a few scraps.

 

I admit for a while this one had me puzzled and I had to walk away from it and let the ideas form in my head.  In the end I was very pleased how this one came together.  I guess someone else was too as it is heading to Alaska tomorrow!  I got it listed in my shop on Friday and this morning it sold.  The panel wall hangings are going really well this year. 

On Friday I mentioned there would be no sewing this weekend as I had another craft to get ready for a local show coming up in November, I deliver to it on Wednesday tho'.   Saturday and this morning was consumed by making 32 of these candy canes! 

How would you like this guy staring back at you?  He has been coming to our pond, just off the family room, for a drink and wow was he thirsty!  Isn't he a beauty, 12 points.

Design Wall Mondays

A perfect fall scene

 Don't you think this is the perfect fall scene, pumpkins and sunflowers.  These are from two different but coordinating panels.  

Then I added some border elements to make it a unique wall hanging that measures 37" x 30".  I admit I stumbled around a bit in the designing process.  I had originally planned to add a picket fence style of border below the pumpkin scene. However, it just wasn't right so I went back to my standard pinwheels.  They just seem to look good on any panel piece.  

And to top it all off I had the perfect sunflower fabric for the outer border. 

And pumpkin fabric for the backing!  I really do enjoy making fall themed projects.  The fabrics are just so warm.  I just listed this one in my Etsy shop.  Two other fall panels sold in the last week so I thought I better get a couple more done.  I'll share the second one soon. 

There is more quilting in my schedule today so I better get to it!  But this weekend most likely no quilting. I have another craft that needs done ASAP!  I deliver to a local craft show on Wednesday and they need to be ready to go.

Out of the box, onto the design wall and done!

I love going back to see what sold the previous year, it gives me an idea of what I should work on.  Recently I did this and decided I should get a few fall wall panel quilts done(out of the box!).

This panel started out with this larger piece and had a few more smaller pumpkin ones attached.  Smaller wall hangings sell better than larger ones. So I chopped off the small pumpkin ones and will use those at a later date.  

Recently I saw someone using HRT's in a border and decided I needed to try that. So, after auditioning my fabrics, out came my HRT ruler and decided on what size I needed to make.  That ruler sure makes fast work of HRT's with no trimming.  This wall hanging came together quickly. And it was time for some fun custom quilting on it.

  

The back came out nicely too! It is about 30"x33". 

I have enjoyed getting out some of my fall decorations again. Fall is a favorite time and an easy one to decorate for. I forgot I had those little straw bales so that was a fun find!  I will need to get some real pumpkins for my front porch though. Do you enjoy decorating for each season?

Yesterday I decided there were some domestic things I needed to take care of before I did anything else.  Before we went on vacation we picked our grapes and just froze them, five one gallon bags full. It was time to make juice out of one of the bags. Oh is it tasty!!  It had been a couple of years since our vines produced any and that the critters left them alone.  So this was a real surprise.

My July OMG

At the beginning of July I picked a wall hanging that needed quilting and binding to finish for my One Monthly Goal(OMG).  I am happy to report that I finished and therefore met my goal!

This wall hanging started out with a panel that I picked up in May at my local quilt shop, Pine Needles. It was so cute I couldn't resist! I mean just look at that gingham pumpkin with an aqua wheelbarrow😉  It is Happy Fall by Deb Strain for Moda.

After squaring up the panel I started adding borders to make it unique.  First a brown small border and then I mimicked the gingham pumpkin by piecing a gingham border in orange. 

Next came the decision of adding pinwheels to the right side in green, brown and a gold with a light background.  I dug in my scrap buckets for these.  

All of the quilting was planned out in my head before I pinned it on my frame...all except the wide green border sections.  I quilted everything else first. Hook swirls on the panel itself, continuous curve in the light parts of the pinwheel leaving the colored portions unquilted helps them pop out a bit.  Wishbones in the skinny green bottom border. On the gingham border section I quilted a fourth inch away from the seams. 

Then I walked away from it for a day to decide what to quilt in the wide green.  After looking at the panel to see what I could pull from there to inspire me, I saw pumpkins.  Why not quilt something that would resemble pumpkins a bit.  Thus the curves like I would quilt inside a pumpkin.

And there we have a finished wall hanging.  So many of you have said in the past that you were afraid of working with panels, don't be.  Just give it a whirl and you might be surprised!  Pull one out and if you need any help just message me and I'll see if I can help you.
