Weekly goals for To Do Tuesday and OMG for July

Another week, a little more progress.  For the last week I had three goals listed, the first one was certainly a fun one...

  • Make a rope bowl with a friend who wanted to learn how to make them. ✅ My friend made the tall one, she used a thicker rope and made it into a basket for mittens. I started the oval one and couldn't decide if I wanted it taller so I stopped for now. Because I wanted it to have a fall look to it, I wrapped it with fall color fabrics in one section. Next I started the yellow one, it is a poly rope and doesn't hold it's shape as well as cotton rope does. You'll see the finish below.

  • The second goal was to put borders on my OMG quilt. ✅  Yes!  I just squeezed it in two days before the linky party was closed!  You can see the result in THIS post.
  • The third goal was to see which table runners needed to be made. ✅  I needed to remake this sunflower one.  Look closely at my props to see the finished yellow rope bowl.  The yellow and gray poly rope needed a little more gray added for interest. So I wrapped a section in gray fabric.  To end the rope nicely I swirled it, added a button in the center of it and then hot glued it to the bowl to cover where I started wrapping the gray fabric.

That was the end of my goal list for the week. However, I did work on a few other things. Got the binding on the small lap quilt(which I can't show you for a couple weeks).  The other thing I did was pull out my fall panel supply and found this one I started and got stalled on.  Some unsewing occurred and now I need figure out where to go with it next.  This is my July OMG project.

Only two goals this week:
  • Quilt and bind two lap quilts.

OMG-One Monthly Goal

My goal for June was to get the two borders on this flimsy. I was able to do that this week!  Setting goals is a good thing to help push our projects forward, no matter if it is quilting or something else.

Our Calla Lilies are blooming so nicely, there were 13 in bloom when I took this picture on Monday with at least two more to bloom. I like checking on these every morning as it seems the blossom stock shoots up a couple inches every night. The first one started off small and now it's so tall. I love these exotic flowers.  DH says they look like wedding flowers, so elegant.  I wouldn't mind having more colors.  I do have a bulb or two that is supposed to be yellow, but it's hasn't shown itself yet this year.  We saw it last year.  We do have to dig them up each fall and put in the basement but since there aren't many I don't mind.

Patty at Elm Street Quilts hosts a monthly link party, OMG, at the beginning of the month for us to link our goal and at the end of the month to post that we met our goal.

It's June and time for picking a project to finish for my One Monthly Goal.  I did it last month and so why not try again!!

I would like to add the two borders onto this quilt and as a bonus get it quilted and bound!  I am sure I have fabric in the stash for the borders so that part shouldn't be hard at all.

My July OMG

At the beginning of July I picked a wall hanging that needed quilting and binding to finish for my One Monthly Goal(OMG).  I am happy to report that I finished and therefore met my goal!

This wall hanging started out with a panel that I picked up in May at my local quilt shop, Pine Needles. It was so cute I couldn't resist! I mean just look at that gingham pumpkin with an aqua wheelbarrow😉  It is Happy Fall by Deb Strain for Moda.

After squaring up the panel I started adding borders to make it unique.  First a brown small border and then I mimicked the gingham pumpkin by piecing a gingham border in orange.

Next came the decision of adding pinwheels to the right side in green, brown and a gold with a light background.  I dug in my scrap buckets for these.

All of the quilting was planned out in my head before I pinned it on my frame...all except the wide green border sections.  I quilted everything else first. Hook swirls on the panel itself, continuous curve in the light parts of the pinwheel leaving the colored portions unquilted helps them pop out a bit.  Wishbones in the skinny green bottom border. On the gingham border section I quilted a fourth inch away from the seams.

Then I walked away from it for a day to decide what to quilt in the wide green.  After looking at the panel to see what I could pull from there to inspire me, I saw pumpkins.  Why not quilt something that would resemble pumpkins a bit.  Thus the curves like I would quilt inside a pumpkin.

And there we have a finished wall hanging.  So many of you have said in the past that you were afraid of working with panels, don't be.  Just give it a whirl and you might be surprised!  Pull one out and if you need any help just message me and I'll see if I can help you.

Short and Sweet-OMG

I'll make this a short and sweet post.  Here is my One Monthly Goal for August-I want to applique and bind this little wall hanging.  It was started about a year ago and it has been in this stage or that stage along the way.

July OMG finished

Yes, another quilt off the 'To Be Quilted' shelf!  For July's One Monthly Goal I wanted to get this flimsy quilted and bound.  I have had it done for over a week now and just waiting till I got back from a little vacation to post it.
You can read about the beginnings of this quilt HERE, including finding a link for the tutorial of this block.

I was planning on doing an allover freehand design on my Nolting FunQuilter. However, a little voice just kept saying 'you have to do something else'.  So I compromised and did a freehand allover in the center portion, it's a swirly feather with some hook swirls thrown in.

Followed by ribbon candy in the blue border and X's in the outside border of squares. I am happy I spent the extra time to do these little touches that go a long way to dress it up.

For some unknown reason I had a problem with the binding.  When it was done and laying on the floor the binding/border was waving at me. I don't usually have any problems with binding so I am not sure what went wrong.  Then I tried really steaming it and still it was waving.  After letting it set for a couple days I decided I had to do the right thing and rip off the binding.  It was so worth it, it now lays flat, and I am happy:)   As soon as I get some good photos I will be listing it in my Etsy shop.

Thanks to Patty at Elm Street Quilts for hosting the OMG(One Monthly Goal) each month.  I'll be
linking up over there.

I mentioned that I was on vacation last week. We took the camper and went to visit our son and DIL last weekend, that way we could social distance and just do outdoor things.  It was wonderful.  And then DH and I went on to camp near lakes and a bike trail.  So relaxing and almost makes one feel normal again.  No sewing at all last week and I am totally okay with that!
While kayaking we spotted a loon and her baby.  We saw lots of deer and even a fox that came through the campground, but sadly he was trotting faster than I could get my camera for a photo.

While biking on the trail a black bear ran across the path about 75 yards in front of DH.  He wasn't scared but I was a bit.  We stopped and let him go on his merry way and then we continued.  I don't mind seeing them at all IF I am in a vehicle but we were rather exposed on the bikes!

My July OMG project

Last month I quilted a lap quilt for my June OMG. So why not put another lap quilt on the list for my July OMG.  It will feel good to have another of them of the shelf.  I will quilt and bind this quilt.  It will receive a freehand allover design.  The name of the game is done is good:)

June OMG is a finish!

I am delighted to have my June One Monthly Goal finished.  This quilt started out in February of 2019.  I was happily piecing along and then realized I didn't cut all of the quilt out and so it got put on hold.  Fast forward to last December when I finally had a bit of time to finish cutting and piecing it.  Back into the closet it went until i could figure out how to quilt it.

I figured that if I put it on my OMG list that I would finally get it done, it worked.  I chose to do a freehand all over swirl with feathers on my Nolting 17" FunQuilter.  It quilted up in no time at all.  I used Hobbs 80/20 batting and a medium gray Glide thread.

The piecing pattern is from Sparrow Studioz and is called Shuffle Quilt, it's a free download.  Easy but still a fun pattern to whip up.  I used a fat quarter pack that I had won a few years ago and added the navy blue yardage for the background.

Thanks to Elm Street quilts for hosting the OMG, I'll be linking up over there.  Also at Tish's UFO Bustin,  Michelle's Beauty PageantPatchwork and Quilts and Cynthia's Oh Scrap since you could easily use scraps for the bricks.

June OMG met

I am so happy to report I met my June goal for One Monthly Goal.  The goal I set for myself was to work hard on 10 turkey table runners.  I planned to make 200 feathers for the turkeys and get them set onto at least 5 of the background fabrics.  I achieved that and more!!  You can see HERE what I had to work with at the beginning of June.

After putting together the 200 feathers into 20 groups of 10, I glued them to the 10 table runner background fabrics.  I was still in the mood to work on them so I cut and sewed the borders onto 5 of the runners.  Next I felt like quilting, I managed to quilt up 3 of them before I decided I had spent enough time for now on these.  I am so happy that I achieved my goal and went beyond what I set out to do.

If you are asking what OMG is check out this link to Elm Street Quilts for all the info.  I'll be linking up for the end of the month  OMG celebration party.  I hope to see many of you there:)

I do have a pattern for the turkey table runner called Gobble it Up,  if you are interested you can email me, link on my About page.  At some point I am hoping to get it listed in my Etsy shop.  If you are interested in a finished Gobble it Up table runner, I have it available in my Etsy shop.

May's OMG-One Monthly Goal

Hmmm, it was a hard decision what to pick for my OMG for May.  But in the end I decided to pick 3 identical snowman table runners that need quilting, binding and the last of their applique's added.

These were pieced in February while we were in Arizona camping.  I actually pieced six identical ones, but let's not get crazy thinking I can get them all quilted this month!! There are lots of other projects that I know I will need to get done this month also.

OMG-One Monthly Goal done

Whoo hoo I have met my One Monthly Goal with several days to spare!

This is a tutorial by Missouri Star called Diamond Dash.  It is a quick and fun quilt to make.

My goal this month was to quilt and bind-done. I did some ruler work and some freehand work on it.  For the first time I did a freehand woodgrain quilting design in the batik rectangle rows.

I love the texture on the back.

I will be linking with One Monthly Goal.

Cheerful

Cheerful is the name of the pattern by A Bright corner. I just thought it was a fun quilt and I had to make it this past February. Completing it by quilting and binding this is my One Monthly Goal for April.

This one just had to have custom quilting. I do admit I previously thought I would do something entirely different for the quilting. But the day before I put it on the frame, I got to thinking I would look to the fabric for inspiration and this blue block with flowers got me to thinking.  See the flowers on it, that is what got me thinking of choosing two flower designs and treat the block as one instead of individual designs in each section of the block.  Much easier to execute and less starts and stops. Do you ever let your fabric talk to you?

Here is the other flower design.

The tools and thread used throughout this quilt.

Love when I have backing in my stash that just works perfectly!

My one February goal

I will be joining in with several other quilters over at Elm Street Quilts for One Monthly Goal this month.  This quilt was pieced in 2013-14, it's waited patiently for me to pull it out and get it quilted and bound. That is my goal for February.  Do you see the little pink paper pinned to the top border-I even left myself a little note that I wanted to do Suzies Magic binding with the leftover scraps from the little twister shapes! Good thing I did leave that note as I wouldn't have even thought about it!   I guess I better get in gear and get a quilting plan put together.

November OMG

I have not taken the time to write a post for OMG for a few months. But today I will as I do really have a goal that must be met. The OMG is being hosted by Elm Street Quilts for the rest of this year.

A friend of mine/customer that purchased a table topper from me last year came to me and asked if I could make 2 more of them in her fabrics. She was on vacation and found them in Montana. She has a special purpose for them at her tables for a church luncheon coming up in Dec.

So the purples and beige will become a topper like the fall colored one in the background. Now off to work I go!!  Wishing everyone good luck with finishing their Novermber goals!

A Queen for Friday-OMG

I had a very good week-I finished this queen size quilt for us!  At the beginning of the month I entered this as my OMG challenge over at Red Letter Quilts. Here is what it looked like on April 1st.

The pattern was from April 2010 American Patchwork & Quilting magazine called Color Cues. A year ago I was fortunate to have won this bundle of wonderful colors of fat quarter solids from The Fat Quarter shop!!  I was so very happy and almost immediately I knew that I would use them to make this quilt.  I pulled out the brightest colors to use for this quilt.
I cut it out in January of this year and pieced most of the blocks while at retreat the end of January. Then, since I wasn't in a big hurry, I set it aside and moved onto other things-you know how that goes right?  But, it is almost at the season I want to be using it, I figured setting it as my April goal would assure me that I get it done.

And here is what it looks like now at the end of the month!  It was a very easy pattern to make and I love how it came out.  Normally I would like to quilt it to bits, but since it will be on a bed I wanted it softer and more cuddly. Therefore, quilting an allover more open design made sense. So freehand one of my fun designs was a good choice.  I used Quilters Dream Wool for the batting, Glide turquoise thread on top and So fine grey in the bobbin made for easy quilting and great tension. It has some really great texture because of the wool batting.  If the sun would just shine I could get some better pictures, it has been gloomy and rainy all week here.

I leave you today with a pic of our wild plum blossoms-oh man they smell soooo good, wish I could send you all a wonderful scent too!

I hope everyone has met their monthly goal!  I am pretty darn happy with myself as I have 3 queens that I finished up this year!!  This one was totally start to finish, the other 2 were UFO's.  Ahhhhh ;-)

My April OMG goal

My One Monthly Goal for April is to turn this stack of blocks and turquoise fabric into a queen size finished quilt.  Heidi at Red  Letter Quilts is hosting this wonderful link up, to give us incentive she has some sponsors offering prizes. If you finish what you say you will, you have a chance at winning! Plus it gives us the little push, we sometimes need, to finish a project. Now that's a win right there! Won't you come join me this month? Just pic a project, blog it, and link up at Hiedi's right now!  I am headed over there to link up.

One Monthly goal is finished

I decided to get right on it and finish my OMG way early this month.   A year or so ago I saw this tutorial on Tall Prairie Grass blog and thought it was pretty fun looking. And since we all know I seem to generate a lot of scraps/strings it was perfect to try out.  So I started by figuring out how wide I wanted my strips to be, I picked an odd number of 7 inches-don't ask me why, I have no idea!!  Maybe it just happened to be the width of the first scrap I picked up, who knows!  But I can tell you I thought this was so fun to work on and pick all the bright colors during a Minnesota winter.  At first I was planning on a white sashing until I spied this aqua jelly roll sitting in my sewing room with no purpose. Bingo the perfect addition to the brights.

You do need to be a bit careful as there are lots of bias edges as you put the chevrons together.

The inspiration for the setting is from the book Smash Your Precut Stash.  And would ya just look at that, I have no more snow on my deck, I can take pictures outside again!!!

I didn't have quite enough backing fabric so I decided to take time to piece a couple more chevron rows, I love it!  With all the color and business going on I opted for a simple meander on this one. The binding is all from leftover bindings from several quilts. I felt like I busted a lot of strings in this one.

It sure was handy to have my little iron and ironing table right beside my sewing machine and scraps basket.

And because it looks cute all rolled up. Reminds me of  Easter Eggs :-)
