A string finish

Oh but it feels so good to be getting some of these quilts quilted and bound. Over the winter I pieced this one and it made it over the finish line this past week. Then I had to wait to take photos as the weather didn't want to cooperate.

Phone book pages were used to piece the strings to. Using a jeans needle and a small stitch length makes for easier tearing the paper off.

A large stipple sped up the quilting process a lot, it also keeps the quilt a bit softer.

So thankful for friends that give me fabric for my donation quilts, in this case the backing.

Starting another scrappy string quilt

This is the start of yet another scrappy string quilt using greens, blues and a tad of neutral. I need lots more blocks, these are 9.5".

The pattern is Two Bits by Cynthia from Quilting is more fun than Housework blog. It's a fun pattern but I wish I would have had a lighter neutral available for the pinwheel. They don't stand out as much as I wished. I am going to take a little break from it.

And here is what we saw the other day while ATVing. These big horn sheep were actually on the golf course lawn!  We saw a couple others in the mountains but didn't get their photo as they disappeared too quickly and were farther away.

Another scrappy string UFO

 So glad to have moved a scrappy UFO along. I had several green string blocks hiding out in the closet.

I added more green blocks and began the blue blocks. These blocks are formed by piecing the strings to a phone book page. Because I wanted the blocks as big as possible they came out to an odd size of 7.75" x 10.75" before assembling into rows. If you piece this way be sure to use a larger needle and a small stitch, this makes for easier removal of the paper. 

A couple days later I had a flimsy lap size all pieced. This makes the third blue/green flimsy pieced in the last month.  If you missed the other two you can see them HERE and HERE.  I do see a small dent forming in the string bin. But I want to see more so I started a fourth flimsy. Not sure I am liking it yet.

A stringy finish

 You might remember me working on this stringy flimsy in January.  It is a flimsy no longer because I quilted and bound it! 

All made from strings and a little bit of neutral yardage for the background. 

String quilts are really fun to make and almost feel like a free quilt! My string blocks finished at 8" square and I added a 2" sashing in between so I didn't have to deal with all those string seams coming together.

I had so much fun working with strings again that I actually started making blocks for another one. It won't be finished anytime soon, but I'll be happy when I open this UFO box and find lots of string blocks started.  Still trying to bond with my featherweight so I brought it out, oiled it up and began to sew a few blocks up.

Oh Scrap!

Churndash Court

Ever since the All About Strings blog hop I have been wanting to dig into my strings.  I ran across this pattern by Sassafras Lane called Churndash Court and thought it was the perfect little quilt to whip up.

It is paper pieced and works up pretty quickly.  This will be another H2H donation quilt.  It measures 36" square.  And this is my third Q2 FAL finish!!  I am so excited to have managed to get this far and it is early in the quarter.  Three out of seven done so far.

 Because this is a baby quilt I wanted it soft and snuggle so I did a simple meander on it.

The backing is a cute monkey flannel that will make this quilt even more snuggly!  This was in a bag of flannel and fleece yardage that a friend gave me when she was cleaning out her sewing room.  Another friend gave me the poly batting that she didn't want anymore.

Strings are a thing

The RSC17 project that I have started is using from my string bin. I now have January purple blocks and February aqua blocks for the string quilt. I have no plans on the exact size this will be as it will be a donation one so this will fit whomever.

If you have been following me you might remember these are pieced on phone book pages that are 6" wide. I taped two together to make the rectangle which I believe is 15" long. These are so fun to make although it makes a big mess when working with strings, but, digging through and finding fabrics you forgot you have is fun!  Notice the diamond  pattern forming because I made some blocks slant left and some slant right. Because these blocks are so long I won't get all of the RSC colors of the year into one quilt.  All of the colors will get made and then divide between two quilts and I am OK with that.  The name of the game for me is to use many scraps!

February's OMG quilt

My February goal for OMG at Red Letter Quilts is finished and on our couch!!

When I started this quilt in Dec. 2014 I was just making it for fun with no idea in mind that I would want to keep it. It was made from strings in the string bin. It was fun to make and I was happy with how it came together. And so many of you said you loved it when I showed the flimsy(top) before too.  Last fall a client came to pick up a runner she ordered and she saw another quilt on my couch and she loved it and bought it!! So I needed a replacement and when I finished this earlier this week I thought it just went so well in our living room that I might just keep it!


I was able to get outside and snap a picture or 2 today ;-)

A local friend just gifted me the backing fabric and it was the perfect size I needed-it was meant to be!  Thanks Ginny :-)

Freehand feather design from a Patsy Thompson DVD.

 This was all string pieced on phone book pages. The first time I had tried using the phone book foundation and I love doing it, and the paper tore off easily.  Makes me want to make another!! Oh wait I am working on one but definitely not these colors!  

It measures in around 53x63.  Hobbs Batting 80/20 and quilted with Glide thread.

Quilting, quilting, quilting!!

These stack and whack style blocks have been percolating in the back of the closet for 6 years probably! They were supposed to be a vest way back when, and now I think what an ugly vest that would be, so I turned it into a quit to be donated.

This is a strippy tumbler quilt, a fun one to piece using leftover strings, and fun to quilt with freehand ferns.

Whew I am really tired tonight, but I did manage to get a lot done today. Finished up this string tumbler that I started a week or more ago. Yesterday I had a friend over and she started one and I worked more on this. Finished it up this morning. The inspiration for this quilt came from http://www.maryquilts.com/strings/string-tumblers/ Thanks Mary. It's an awesome way to use leftovers from other projects.
