Starting another scrappy string quilt

This is the start of yet another scrappy string quilt using greens, blues and a tad of neutral. I need lots more blocks, these are 9.5".

The pattern is Two Bits by Cynthia from Quilting is more fun than Housework blog. It's a fun pattern but I wish I would have had a lighter neutral available for the pinwheel. They don't stand out as much as I wished. I am going to take a little break from it.

And here is what we saw the other day while ATVing. These big horn sheep were actually on the golf course lawn!  We saw a couple others in the mountains but didn't get their photo as they disappeared too quickly and were farther away.

My finishes for the week

I am so happy to have finished this quilt I was working on at retreat last month. This is the last time you will see it!!  This pretty purple was from a free pattern from Material Girlfriends. They publish one pattern a month for free, but you have to download it during that month. This one is called 3 yard Bravo.  

I couldn't finish the piecing while at retreat because I didn't cut enough for the last star block. So earlier this week I finished the star and added the three borders. The quilting happened the very next day.  Looking  digging through my stash I found the perfect backing, a lavender minky type of fabric that was given to me by a friend. I had not worked with this type of fabric before, it shed and I didn't like that. However, the final result is pretty luxurious!! 

Next up was a potato chip quilt that my grandson helped me make the blocks. We cut 2.5"x4.5" bricks in neutrals and darks using the die from the 8" AccuQuilt cube. This gave us a 12" finished block.

The backing is a pretty fall leaves flannel that the same friend gave me. I just needed to add a navy flannel to make it big enough. All of these quilts are meandered in order to get them done. I finished this one off with a navy solid binding.

The final one I will share today is this child size one using Cynthia's Two bits pattern. I pieced this one quite some time ago and was waiting it's turn in line to be quilted. 

I found a very soft tiny corduroy that was also given to me. It was almost the right size. And as luck would have it I had all these strips sewn together into the right size to add to it. The corduroy was a very light pink but it really looks washed out here. 

These three quilts will be donation quilts that I will send home with my DIL when they come for Thanksgiving. She hands them off to her church group who distributes to those who need a quilty hug. And I feel great being able to help. I have a few more to finish and share with you soon.

To the Flimsy stage

Two Bits is to the flimsy stage! Pattern by Cynthia who blogs at Quiltingismorefunthanhousework. Oh I am love with how it came together. After sewing the blocks and rows together I framed it with a solid black. I had extra scraps(imagine that!) so the colorful borders are all strings pieced together for the right length. 

The scraps for the borders were all cut at roughly 5" in length, meaning I laid the strings out on the cutting mat and just rough cut at 5" intervals. Pieced them and then trimmed to 4.5" in width. This quilt was so fun! I will be a donation when finished.

And onto the next UFO.  A long time ago I started making these blue blocks along with green ones and tried a new to me technique to add the sashings in tan and brown. This method worked out great and hopefully I will have another flimsy ready soon:)

                                            

Our Peonies are doing great. We counted at least 100 buds on them. Hubbies hand to show you the size of the bloom.

Bright Scrappy Fun

Fun is what I have been having this past week working with my bright strings again.  Three years ago I started working on these bright blocks using a pattern from Cynthia called Two Bits. Then I stalled out for some reason and into the closet it went along with all the other UFO's.  Sara inspired me to look at my UFO's since she has really been crossing off her UFO list and even emptied her big gray bin;) So last weekend I went through a couple shelves of UFO's and picked this one to work on. I might have shook my head a time or two at the amount of UFO's that are in that closet!  Some are just waiting to be quilted, a lot of the UFO's are ones for donation quilts eventually. 

This is where I left off. I had to look around to find my orange and yellow scraps first and then I made three of each of those.  Still not enough blocks made, so I went back and made more pink, green, purple and aqua. By the way I trimmed my blocks to 9.5" because I have the 9.5' square ruler to make that easy. Today I will be stitching these all together and then I think I will add a small white border and then make scrappy piano key borders since I still have loads of strings to use up.  It felt amazing to work with my scraps again.

If you have been wondering how my slipper knitting is coming along, I have made progress with 6 pair knitted. The teal ones need sewing up yet. The next color yarn needs to be picked as I have really enjoyed knitting these in the evenings here and there. The pattern I am using is called Grandma's slippers and I found it on Pinterest. These are the two smallest sizes for kids. I used two strands, a variegated yarn with a solid color yarn for the first four pair. The teal ones I used solid in two shades of teal. I will be working on another pair today.

Scrappy bits

Thursday I declared a play day in the sewing room, I could choose to do anything I wanted.  Most days I am sewing/quilting something to put in my Etsy shop.  So Wednesday night I looked and looked through my pins on Pinterest and in my quilt downloaded patterns etc. Just waiting for something to jump out at me that begged to be made. By the time I went to bed I still hadn't figured out what that would be.  I wanted it figured out so I could just jump in and do it in the morning.  Thursday came around and while having coffee and browsing the internet again it hit me...I have been wanting to start one of Cynthia's Two Bits quilts scrappy style.  

Here is my design wall as of Thursday night. Eight scrappy gorgeous blocks done!  I love them!  There will be more joining them, sometime. No hurry to finish it so I'll take my time and when I need a break from the every day sewing I will make a few more.  But gosh it was so fun!!  Now I just need to find my bright orange and yellow bags of scraps:0
