New cutting table

My old cutting table, which is nothing but a 2'x4' folding table with height adjustment, served me well for many years.  The hubster even fashioned some leg extensions to get it at the perfect height for me.   But, after seeing so many wonderful cutting tables made using cubes that had so much wonderful storage, a week ago we went to the local home improvement store to see what I could get to suit my needs.  The old table was 35 1/4" off the floor, perfect for my 5'4" height.  They didn't have all the cubes I needed in the store at the time, but were expecting a truck in a few days. I was so disappointed I had to wait!!

On Thursday they got them in and we went out that night and got them. I put them together on Friday while DH was at work. They are easy peasy to put together, plus I worked at a trailer house factory when I was 21 and put cabinets together-a little tidbit you didn't know about me!  Did I like it-no, but, it was a paycheck!!

On Saturday put two of the 9 cube units back to back, clamping them into place to hold them while DH screwed them together using metal brackets on the ends of the top and bottom of the units.  The 6 cube unit went on one end and he put in a few screws to hold that to the 9 cube units(I didn't get a pic of that).

After the units were hooked together, DH put caulk adhesive on several areas of the units top. Then we laid the top on.  There were some gaps between the unit tops and the table top so the caulk was to fill in that space.  Here he is screwing up through the cube into the 2'x4' laminate top.

And it is finished, except for the edge of the top. I don't want to use the laminate strips you can buy as we didn't have good luck with them in the past.  I'll figure something else out.

With 24 cubbies to fill, my Sunday consisted of  emptying out tubs of fabric that had just been sitting on my sewing room floor taking up space. Now they are all organized so I can see what I have, and be able to find and use it more easily. I am hoping this will really help me from over buying. At least it will make me feel more guilty to see a lot of what I have!!   This picture was taken after going through Batiks.  I still need a container to put the batik scraps into before going into the cube.  The other 9 cube unit houses Christmas fabric.  There was a whole lot of petting and folding fabric. I use my 6" ruler to wrap it around.

The end 6 cube unit will house some favorite patterns and quilt books/magazines. And probably some more fabric, LOL  Yes I know I am sick, I have a very bad disease but I am not a hoarder as I did through out a bunch of stuff in the process and picked out a few things to take to guild tonight for the giveaway table.

Can you tell I am in love with my new cutting/storage table!!!!!!!  What an improvement from the old to the new.  I felt like I was working in a fabric store yesterday as I folded and folded!  I did work in one for a short time several years ago, but then quit as I discovered I wasn't getting as much done at home as I would like.

  6. Thanks for sharing how you made this. I've been wanting to do this for a while. It looks fantastic, and you must have had so much fun adding your fabric to those cubes. Great job!

  7. Very nice! I did something similar for my ironing station using cabinets from Target. I mounted then on another piece of plywood so I could put casters on it and be able to roll it around. It's too tall for cutting but when you need a new ironing station it's the best!

  10. This is a big improvement. It looks great and is super functional. Have you thought about adding molding/trim to cover the edges? Enjoy your new table. I sure enjoyed learning the new little tidbits about you.

  12. Great idea! Having a cutting table at the right height is so important. I finally bought an Ikea table for my sewing area. It raises up to the perfect height for me when cutting fabric. I would love to fold and fill those cubes...Very nice!

  14. What a great station! Storage AND the cutting table, perfect. Being able to see my fabric is crucial to being inspired by it and I only have about half of it out, but no more room for visible storage right now. Soon though.... :)

  15. I think I'm going to short out my computer by drooling on the keyboard!! I'm quite envious of this beautiful new storage and cutting table, Vicki! Somehow I missed this post when it came out a couple days ago. Do you have everything put away now?

  16. I have an idea of what you could use to trim your top, our Home Depot has wooden trims that are pretty fancy. We used some that have a leaf pattern on it. It's unfinished wood, so you could stain it if you wanted to, we left ours alone and it looks nice.

  17. What about just painting the raw wood part? It would fill in the gaps, so that your clothes and the fabric wouldn't snag on those edges. I have the plastic edging coming off one of my bookcases, in front of my ironing board. I finally just broke that part off.

  18. Great setup! Now I'm looking at my space to see how I can do something similar. And I know what you mean about the laminate strips - we've had it peeling off cabinet door edges but with super glue, it's on for good!

  19. Somehow I missed this post, so I'm just seeing it now. What a cool idea for a cutting table with storage! And you have a plan for what goes where, too! Yay! Hope you have a week full of quilting fun!
