Secondary pattern-Island Batik challenge for July

There are so many possibilities to get a secondary design in your quilt.  You can use just one block, if it is the right one and get a secondary pattern happening after putting several of them together.  Or you can use 2 different blocks alternating throughout your quilt.

The Island Batik July challenge is creating a secondary pattern in a quilt 36" or larger.  I had been considering several different ideas but when I saw Sarah's quilt she designed for the quilt along to go with the 12 days of Christmas blog hop she was hosting I knew that was the one I wanted to do.  I chose to make mine smaller for a wall hanging.   Here are the two blocks that make up this quilt.

I love the fall colors that Island Batik sent me.  I love working with the darker colors for fall.

Can you spot the two blocks in the quilt?  Sarah designed the border with the center block bleeding out into the outer border.  I love quilts that do that!  I used Hobbs Thermore batting in this wall hanging.  The batting sure has a different feel-stiff like, but it sure leaves a nice flat product in the end.  I will use it again it some table runners that will be in the coming months.

Everything was ruler quilting on my Nolting Funquilter except for the wishbone quilting in the outer border.  Do you like how creative I got with the quilting in corners of the border?  Usually I have a hard time with how to turn the corners while doing the wishbone-in this method there is no problem
It could be done with lots of other types of designs too.

Another monthly fun challenge thanks to Island Batik, Hobbs batting and Aurifil for providing all I needed to make this 44" x 44" wall hanging.  You will see it soon in my Etsy shop.

  2. I am admiring your wishbones. I just was quilting some yesterday and I started mine in the middle instead of a corner. You're look so nice!

  4. Great design! The quilting is just beautiful. I really like how you treated the corners of the borders and am going to have to remember this. Nice finish.

  5. Hi Vicki! I love how the pattern goes out into the border. Very, very cool as are these colors and fabrics you used. And the quilting! I like that idea for the corners - I have wanted to do that pattern but wasn't sure how to go around the corner. This is a great idea! That's for sharing this with us today. Happy Friday! ~smile~ Roseanne

  6. Lovely secondary pattern quilt! I haven't tried the Hobbs Thermo yet. I may reserve it for a wall hanging now.

  7. This is about the 3rd or 4th time I've seen this pattern lately - I remember it because of the way the blocks flow into the outer border...very cool! Your quilting on your quilt is amazing, and yes, I like the way you quilted the corners. Sometimes it's difficult to turn the corners - you did it perfectly!

  8. I love your wall hanging version of Sarah's pattern! I didn't really think about the secondary patterns in her design until I was literally putting my last blocks together. I just was drawn to the overlap into the border part of the design. Funny what our brains latch onto! But once seen, never unseen, right? Your fancy wishbone corner turning technique made me chuckle! Hey, it works great :)

  12. Secondary patterns are my favorite designs, all my Scrap Dance patterns have that. This is so pretty, I like the design going into the border too. I've only done one like that so far.
