Island Batik November challenge

On Tuesday I teased you with my start of the November Island Batik challenge.  This month is log cabins.  Now I will be honest with you that log cabins are not my favorite blocks to make but I was up to the challenge nonetheless.

Some of you guessed I was making a tree with those blocks.  Well you would be wrong;)  After visiting Pinterest and gathering a ton of ideas for log cabin settings I settled on a wreath wall hanging.  After all it is the season for wreaths.

Next I turned to EQ8 to build the right size block that would work with the dark forest greens with metallic gold. I have three different green batiks and a neutral batik.

The greens were limited and I used almost every inch!  These were in their Stashbuilder rolls which are 5" wide x WOF.  I took several rolls apart to get what I needed. They are so rich and pretty, I only wish the camera could capture the true richness.

Here is a close up.  Now imagine the metallic gold shining up at you.  I guess by now you get the idea I love these fabrics!

I wanted the fabrics to shine so I kept the quilting simple with the freehand all over hook swirl design.  After quilting I turned to EQ again to see if they had an applique bow and sure enough.  I just enlarged it a little and it worked perfectly.

Normally Batiks look the same on both sides.  But these metallic ones had no design on the back, just a mottled look.  It was very hard for me to put those beautiful designs inside the binding.

Yes, I used what we would normally think of the wrong side as my right side so I could have solid look binding.

And here it is on my wall.

As an Island Batik Ambassador I am provided with fabrics from them.  Hobbs batting and Aurifil thread is also provided which I also used in this project.

  1. Vicki, that is so neat! The way you laid your blocks out worked perfectly to make the wreath shape. I love it!

  2. Gorgeous. I have a top with some of the gold print fabrics, too. I need to add borders and get it done! Great design, and yes, the gold is stunning.

  3. Lovely! You did such a nice job on using the fabrics (especially the binding) and using eq8 to design the quilt. It is beautiful!

  4. Just beautiful! The way I look at it using the backside of fabrics gives you more options.

  5. Good Morning! I was wrong . . . I should have known better than to guess the obvious! Oh how I love this wreath!! This is one I would actually set aside my dislike of the log cabin block to make this project. Those batiks are just gorgeous in your photos, so I know they are stunning in person. What a great idea to use the wrong side for your binding - how unusual that the design doesn't carry through though. The appliquéd red bow is just the perfect icing on the wreath so to speak. You can hang this with pride - it finished up beautifully. Happy Happy Friday to you. ~smile~ Roseanne

  6. What a great idea for a log cabin block. I love the way the red centers just dance through the wreath. Clever you, flipping the fabric so you had a solid binding! Well done!

  7. Your wreath is perfect! I kind of have a soft spot for log cabin quilts. So I think it is wonderful. Your appliqued bow is so pretty. Your satin stitching is so perfect. It's not as easy as you make it look! Do you mind sharing what stitch width and length you use on your satin stitching?

  10. That is a beautiful wreath Vicki!!! I love the red bow to give it that pop of color. I think this will be able to post as hubby had added something to my computer that was causing me issues not being able to post comments before.

  12. Your wreath is gorgeous! Those deep greens are so beautiful, especially with the metallic accents. I've had one IB fabric this year where there was a noticeable difference between the front and back, but it was only a matter of one side being darker than the other, not one side having no design. That worked out nicely for your binding :)

  14. This is the second Christmas design I've seen today that I really want to make. Probably won't happen this year, but if I can remember where I saw it, I might try to do it next year. Great job.

  15. Well, I love log cabins! I've probably made more of them than any other one design. I love the regular, I love them wonky. I love them with fat logs on one side and skinny on the other. I love small blocks and huge blocks. I just love log cabins! So, of course, I love your wreath. The rich greens and the wonderful reds go so well together and it was ingenious to bind it with the wrong side. A beautiful seasonal quilt that will last long after your ambassador days are over.

  16. This is by far my FAVORITE of the log cabin challenges I've see this month. The greens look great, I love the traditional red at the center of your blocks, and that bow looks great. A really fantastic idea that is really beautiful!

  19. The wreath is perfect! I love it when you can make it all work - even thought it often feels like we are missing some piece. It is hard to put the inside out of a fabric, but it was the right effect!

  20. Nice wreath quilt. I bought a tree one (log cabins) several years ago at a guild garage sale.
