Island Batik challenge featuring Aurifil
I feel like the luckiest gal around(well along with 49 others) that I get to work with Island Batik fabrics every month. But this month we are also working with the wonderful Aurifil threads.
The challenge this month is called Artsy Fartsy. Meaning we are to make something artsy using Island batiks and embellishing with Aurifil threads. I have to say I was way out of my wheelhouse, or my comfort zone or out of my box!! I was really fearful I couldn't pull it off. But I rose to the challenge and am happy to report that I really like my finished product.
Never ever have I done improv curved piecing before. I watched a You Tube video and from there I just winged it!! I wanted it to be like grass or green rolling hills and then the sky. See the pink row of tiny flowers growing on the hillside:)
I used the decorative stitches on my Janome Skline 7 to make pretty stitches with Aurifil thread. I used 80 wt, 50 wt, 40 wt, 28, and a floss! For the floss I put it in my cording foot and did a small zig zag over it.
I thought one of my Island Batik buttons was appropriate to adorn my little quilt. Now we need Aurifil buttons! My little wall hanging is about 11 x 18.
Thank you Island Batik and Aurifil threads for making me jump out of my box and create something fun! Thank you for the products used in the project also.
I used fabrics from several different collections to get the coloring I wanted for this project. Most were from the 5" x WOF rolls that are just perfect for adding to your stash.
Next month I will be joining several of the ambassadors in a blog hop using beautiful Island Batik fabrics that were released at Market last May. It's going to be a really fun hop so I hope you'll be back and watching for that.

Vintage Reimagined with Island Batik
So many choices to pick from for the March Island Batik Ambassador. The theme is Vintage Reimagined, we needed to find inspiration from an old quilt or quilt block and make it in an updated version. There are so many wonderful places to find inspiration, old quilt books or magazines, museums, online, perhaps even in your granny's hope chest or attic. Maybe you were lucky enough to be given something your grandma made many years ago.
I found my inspiration in two places. I fondly remember a dresden plate quilt my mom made many many years ago. I have no idea where that quilt is and mom is no longer around to ask. I couldn't even find a picture of it. What I do know, is that she made all the plates by drawing around a cardboard template. The second place I found inspiration was my blog friend Diane, she is working on dresden plate flowers. Once I saw these I knew just what I wanted to make.
We were traveling at the time and I didn't have my dresden plate template ruler. So I turned to my engineer hubby and asked him to draft me one on paper. A little while later I was happily cutting into my Island Batik gold fabrics. After returning home a few days ago I was a able to get them set onto the background fabric and today the quilting was done. Here is a before 'the quilting' shot.
Here you see the whole piece on the longarm. I am quilting my version of Mctavishing for the background. I appliqued the dresden plate flowers on with my longarm by straight stitching inside the edges and seams before I quilted the background. The stems were also stitched on in the same manner.
Ta da...all done!

After all the quilting was done, the leaves were blanket stitched on by machine.

Island Batik November challenge
On Tuesday I teased you with my start of the November Island Batik challenge. This month is log cabins. Now I will be honest with you that log cabins are not my favorite blocks to make but I was up to the challenge nonetheless.
Some of you guessed I was making a tree with those blocks. Well you would be wrong;) After visiting Pinterest and gathering a ton of ideas for log cabin settings I settled on a wreath wall hanging. After all it is the season for wreaths.
Next I turned to EQ8 to build the right size block that would work with the dark forest greens with metallic gold. I have three different green batiks and a neutral batik.
The greens were limited and I used almost every inch! These were in their Stashbuilder rolls which are 5" wide x WOF. I took several rolls apart to get what I needed. They are so rich and pretty, I only wish the camera could capture the true richness.
Here is a close up. Now imagine the metallic gold shining up at you. I guess by now you get the idea I love these fabrics!

I wanted the fabrics to shine so I kept the quilting simple with the freehand all over hook swirl design. After quilting I turned to EQ again to see if they had an applique bow and sure enough. I just enlarged it a little and it worked perfectly.
Normally Batiks look the same on both sides. But these metallic ones had no design on the back, just a mottled look. It was very hard for me to put those beautiful designs inside the binding.
Yes, I used what we would normally think of the wrong side as my right side so I could have solid look binding.
And here it is on my wall.

Log Cabin time
I know a few of you are waiting to see my monthly Island Batik project. It's coming together nicely. It will be done by Friday! Here is my fabric pull. A very rich forest green with yummy metalics. A red batik for an accent, and a pretty creamy/beige background.
It is Log Cabin month. Here is a sneak peak of some of the blocks. Now see if you can figure out what my project will look like!
My week is going to be very full, Cyber week has been very good in my shop. Therefore, I need to get cranking out more runners! Luckily there is nothing else on my schedule besides my log cabins.

Haunted House-Island Batik October
Happy Halloween!! My Island Batik project for October is this paper pieced haunted house. I love decorating for Halloween, so I knew I had to make something to add to my display in the entry way. This month our challenge was to make something paper pieced or using English paper piecing. I much prefer paper piecing;) The haunted house is from 'Made by Marney'. The batiks were furnished by Island Batik. These are from their Paisley Dot collection.
Sorry about the washed out pic, I took it yesterday and now it is dark out as I am writing this, so I don't have great coloring in this closeup. But trust me when I say these colors are so vibrant. I used a Superior orange variegated thread that was in the first box I received from Island Batik three years ago! The diagonal stitching makes it look like it is raining.
It goes perfectly above my Halloween wall quilt. I love it! Another great challenge issued to us Island Batik Ambassadors. There has been a lot of creativity again this month.

Meet Missy
Welcome to my stop on the Island Batik Ambassador blog hop-The Great Outdoors. Meet 'Missy' !
You can get all the details about the hop on the Island Batik blog. There are a whole lot of Ambassadors this year so a lot of inspiration for you follow along with. Being an ambassador means that Island Batik gives us 2 boxes of fabric a year and then gives us challenges each month to use that fabric in. Sometimes these challenges are just perfect for what we like to do and then sometimes it takes us out of our box-that is what a challenge is all about!
Along with the hop, which has been going on for 4 weeks, there is lots of inspiration and giveaways, so hang in to the bottom of the post and I will tell you the info you need to know.
Missy started out as this... When I received this Island Batik collection, called Jungle Cruise, I just knew it had to become a giraffe wall hanging for me, I mean see the giraffe prints:0 I love giraffes! I love the rich tones and the feel of Island Batiks. This was one of several collections released at Spring Market. It should be in stores right now. If yours doesn't carry it ask them to!
The pattern, called My Favorite Earrings by Hissy Fitz Designs, had two giraffes but I chose to do only one as I only had a half yard of the green I wanted to use for the background. And that size quilt is perfect for the wall I wanted it on at the top of my stairs. Every piece of Missy is appliqued on. I use Elmer's Glue to glue the edges of the applique down, since it is Batik's I don't use fusible. I will applique her after the quilting is done.
TaDa, all done! I changed up the borders as I wanted to be able to use all the prints in this collection.
Now you can see some of the straight stitching of the raw edge applique. All the applique was done after quilting and all done while still on the longarm.
Look at her eyelashes!! I changed that up a bit and fringed a piece of Batik and stuck the edge under neath the eyelid before stitching it down. I love the dimension!
