Almost A Lone Star and Island Batik

It's 'Tool Time' for this months Island Batik Ambassador Challenge.  We could choose any tool we wanted to use and make a lap size quilt.  Yes that white background is snow, we got about 8" this past week.

I chose to use the strip tube ruler by Cozy Quilt Designs.  They were kind enough to donate this Almost A Lone Star pattern.  Thank you Daniela!   And thank you to Island Batik for supplying fabric for this challenge.  I chose to use the strip pack Lavendula.  Oh my what gorgeous colors, I love them!

I love to use Batiks when you know you are going to have bias edges, and especially Island Batiks as they don't have a lot of stretch.

It's always fun to see a quilt in it's different stages.  Here is a piece of one quadrant.

And all four quadrants.

And all done.

I was going to use the aqua batik for the border, but after piecing the center I decided I wanted the darker purple which is an Island Batik Basic.  The background fabric is Raindrops Rain Dot Oatmeal.

I enjoyed using a version of hook swirl freehand quilting on the center of this 62" x 62" quilt.   Instead of one hook I did three and sometimes there were only two, whatever fit the space.  Thank you to Hobbs batting for supplying the cotton batting used in this quilt.  Also thank you to Aurifil thread for supplying a large cone of white that I have used in the piecing.

Thank you for visiting my blog and for letting me share my November Tool Time quilt with you.

And now for a finish of my Crossed Canoe quilt

Ahhhhh, yes I finally have my September Island Batik Ambassador quilt all done!  I wrote a post for it the last day of September when I had the top pieced but not quilted.  You can find that post HERE.

This was made using the Accuquilt BOB Crossed Canoe die that I was given from Accuquilt as they partnered with Island Batik this year.  The fabrics are from Island Batik.  And the batting was given to me from Hobbs.  The thread I used for piecing was provided by Aurifil.  Thank you to all those wonderful companies.

I had a little fun quilting it on my Nolting Longarm.  Ruler work in the Crossed Canoe blocks and a freehand meander to represent the swirls in the water that happens when you paddle your canoe;)

And now onto the October project, the theme is Top It Off.  Right up my alley;)

Vintage Reimagined with Island Batik

So many choices to pick from for the March Island Batik Ambassador.  The theme is Vintage Reimagined, we needed to find inspiration from an old quilt or quilt block and make it in an updated version.  There are so many wonderful places to find inspiration, old quilt books or magazines, museums, online, perhaps even in your granny's hope chest or attic.  Maybe you were lucky enough to be given something your grandma made many years ago.

I found my inspiration in two places. I fondly remember a dresden plate quilt my mom made many many years ago.  I have no idea where that quilt is and mom is no longer around to ask.  I couldn't even find a picture of it. What I do know, is that she made all the plates by drawing around a cardboard template.  The second place I found inspiration was my blog friend Diane, she is working on dresden plate flowers.  Once I saw these I knew just what I wanted to make.

We were traveling at the time and I didn't have my dresden plate template ruler. So I turned to my engineer hubby and asked him to draft me one on paper.  A little while later I was happily cutting into my Island Batik gold fabrics.  After returning home a few days ago I was a able to get them set onto the background fabric and today the quilting was done.  Here is a before 'the quilting' shot.

Here you see the whole piece on the longarm.  I am quilting my version of Mctavishing for the background.  I appliqued the dresden plate flowers on with my longarm by straight stitching inside the edges and seams before I quilted the background.  The stems were also stitched on in the same manner.

Ta da...all done!

A close up of the gorgeous gold Island Batiks.

After all the quilting was done, the leaves were blanket stitched on by machine.

Did you notice the ghost quilting of partial dresden flowers?

As an Island Batik Ambassador the fabrics are provided for us by Island Batik.  Along with Hobbs Batting and Aurifil thread.   You can find links to all the Ambassadors blogs HERE.

2019 Island Batik Ambassador

I have some good news, I've been chosen to be an Island Batik Ambassador for 2019.  This will be my fourth year. Wow how time flies when you are having fun.  This year is the most we have ever had with 50 of us talented, creative people picked.  I say people as we have two gentlemen joining in the fun this year.

The application for being an ambassador was sent out in Dec. and we started received our goodies in January.  And let me tell you they are GOODIES!  Yes I just shouted, because it deserves shouting about.

There are the 5" strips of stash builders, lots of  the solid grey, black and white-yes they make solid batiks!  A 10" stack of rainbow batiks with yardage of two coordinating prints.  A blender stack, a gorgeous rayon scarf, 2 yards of a rayon for a shirt perhaps.  And a nice yardage amount of sprinkles!!  My favorite background fabric;)  Also there are Island Batik pins!

In the picture below you see two wrapped packages, those are our secret bundles that we will use later this summer to showcase newly released fabrics from Spring Market.  So be sure to follow along so you get to view them during the big blog hop that is either in August or September.

In addition to Island Batik providing us with wonderful fabrics, they partner with Hobbs Batting and Aurifil Thread.  What a fantastic variety of battings. I use Hobbs 80/20 all the time and love it. But it will be so fun to experiment with their other battings.  You see the bag of Aurifil thread in the pic above. There are some different weights in there, it will be fun to use them in a monthly challenge.

And get this...this year Accuquilt is on board as a partner with Island Batik.  What does all that mean you ask?  It means each of these companies provide us with supplies to complete our monthly challenges.  Isn't that just wonderful!!!  Each year just gets better and better.

I had been looking at accuquilt machines but I just couldn't commit and when we discovered we were receiving a machine, dies, 8"cube etc. I just couldn't believe it!!    There might have been a little shouting and happy dancing going on that day.

Thank you Island Batik, Hobbs Batting, Aurifil and Accuquilt for your generosity.  It is much appreciated and will be so fun to continue to rise to the challenge each month.  You can meet all of the Island Batik Ambassadors right HERE.

I hope you all are having a great week, I know I am!!!!

Island Batik Modern challenge

Another month has rolled around, and as an Island Batik Ambassador the challenge was a Modern crib quilt.  Ooooh Modern, I love, I can do this.  I had so many ideas rolling around in my head it was hard to settle on just one!  But I finally did it.  The design is settled on, the fabric is picked out.  Get ready, set, go!
First things first, make strip sets with pretty colors!  Then trim then into rectangles setting the strips on the diagonal.

Next add white sashings.  Then a deep purple one so they stand out beautifully on the lavender background.  And from there I forgot to take pic's of the other steps.  This was truly build the quilt as I went.  Meaning I did not have the sizes figured out ahead of time.  So somewhat improvisational.

And before long it was pieced and the quilting done.

All the piecing was done using the Aurifil thread that was provided by them.  The beautiful batiks were provided by Island Batik.  And Hobbs provided the batting.

I tried some new designs inspired by Jodi Robinson's new book and her new ruler that I picked up at the MN quilt show last week.

Be sure to check out what my fellow Ambassadors are designing this month

Oh Baby

Island Batik had sent me a Dotalicious 'Wind' pack of 10" squares in this years first shipment box to use for our Ambassador monthly challenges.  These are super fun brights, perfect for a crib quilt.  I used the freebie pattern from Amy Smart.  I did change up the borders a bit to get the size for the challenge. My quilt ended up 40" x 48".

Here is a peek at the cute Dotalicious line, see all the fun bring colors in the packet on the bottom. The lavender on top is what I used for my background.  The dark purple I used for the binding.

Aurifil lavender was my choice of thread for the piecing and the bobbin while longarm quilting it.  The freehand quilting is a swirl flower type of design.  And you get a closeup of some of the squares.

What a fun project!

And because the quilt is purple, here is what is blooming in my yard that is purple.

Don't forget there is still time to visit all the blogs on the 12 Days of Christmas blog hop, today is day 11.  You can find my day HERE.  Sarah has all the blogs listed on her post today HERE.  There is lots of great inspiration for you to get crafting your Christmas gifts right away!  Also Sarah has had to postpone the announcement of the winners of the hop until Aug. 4th as she has had a family matter to attend to.

A box of fabric!

A box of Island Batik fabric that is. Yesterday was my happy day as my second year of being an Island Batik ambassador officially started!!  I am so happy and excited that I got accepted again. It's going to be a very fun year, I mean how could it not as you look at all this wonderful fabric!  And you know that I loved playing with these fabrics and being able to share my projects with all of you this past year.

A gorgeous Coastal Mist 5" stamp pack, a Valentines bundle, a Dotalicious 10" Stack and coordinates, the rolls are their Stash Builders, some blenders, neutrals and a big secret bundle. Island Batik--thank you so much for your generosity!!

And that's not all folks- Aurifil and Superior Threads were also generous and included all these threads to match the fabrics!  Thank you so very much.

I should have a few more posts with Island Batik projects this month so stay tuned!

A new pattern using Island Batiks

I have a new pattern for sale in my Craftsy shop!  This Modern Circles table runner was designed using the gorgeous Island Batik fabrics from a variety of their lines.

It's no secret that I am loving being one of their 2016 Ambassadors;-)  June's theme is Modern, it could be any size we desired.  Modern Circles is 16 x 42 and uses both piecing and applique. It's very quick and easy to make. So fun to make with these great colors.  Did you notice I made a pieced binding? I varied the length of the strips so that when the ends met you wouldn't have to be exact on the length for it to look great.

I used Hobbs Batting 80/20 with a layer of 4 oz. poly on top of that. Threads consisted of Aurifil and Superior King Tut. By doing some dense and some looser quilting the result is a great texture.
The background quilting is my version of Nemeshing that was developed by Bethanne Nemesh of White Arbor quilting.  This was the first time I tried Nemeshing, I admit I was a bit scared to start it, but I sure love how it came out!  I did use my purple air erasable marker to draw in the main curly cues and feathers so I was able to get them exactly where I wanted them. This was quilted on my Nolting Funquilter 17".

Here are the fabrics I used.

And for the background-love the dots!

You can find the pattern in my Craftsy Shop here.
