Yesterday our son and DIL were supposed to come down for our little Christmas gathering at our daughters and her family. But the weather up north got nasty this week with 20" snow dumped at our son's place. And then on top of that they lost power from Thursday 3am to Saturday 5pm. They were lucky enough to borrow a propane heater from someone so they didn't freeze along with water pipes. So they didn't feel comfortable leaving their house. I don't blame them. But we were all disappointed not to have them here.

Iris quilt and socks
So with a little free time on my hands I pinned this quilt on the longarm Saturday morning and just finished the quilting this morning. The pattern is the Iris Quilt by Kitchen Table Quilting. I used a Jelly Roll for it but one could easily use scraps for it. She does give instructions for a scrappy one as well as different sizes. I made the lap size.
I also finished the second sock so now I have a pair! The first sock was done this past spring and then my thumbs started hurting so I stopped doing hand work in the evenings. A couple weeks ago I picked up the knitting again. The thumbs still bother from time to time, but in the evening while watching TV I like to keep my hands busy! These were made to use up leftovers from two other pairs. One of the leftovers was a variegated blue and one a variegated green and I alternated every 10 rows. I like how they came out.
With this pair done and ready to keep my feet warm I started another pair. Just doing about 10 rows a night.

Lovely quilt and socks, Vickie! That quilt pattern looks like a good one for scraps.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about your thumbs bothering you. I've been dealing with carpal tunnel and it seems to effect my thumbs most of all. I'm getting treatment though that is helping. I finally got back to sewing a bit so I don't need anything else interfering with it ;-)
I'm sorry the weather got in the way of your holiday with the family! (But glad I'm not the only one that has happened to.) Oh well. Meanwhile, you're working on pretty things! Love the Iris Quilt design, and so glad you're able to knit again, too.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you missed your son's visit but you made the most of it! A friend of mine started the Iris quilt this weekend. It's a really pretty quilt.
ReplyDeletehad you ever made socks before? they look really good!! sorry your son and family were not able to make it but so totally understandable with all that snow and loosing power. So far with knitting a scarf I do not have the hand/thumb pain that I have with crochet-I still plan to try socks again this upcoming year I tried last year and gave up once again.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Iris Quilt design, also a great idea for scraps. Love your socks! Glad you were able to knit again. I used to knit a lot when I lived in Norway. That reminds me I have a couple of knitted Santa UFO's, too late to finish for this year's Christmas.
ReplyDeletepretty quilt - love the socks
ReplyDeleteReally pretty socks. The Iris quilt pattern would look good just any color combo, wouldn't it? That's a keeper!
ReplyDeletei'm sorry you can't get your family all together- it's happening at my house too! My 96 yo aunt won't travel if there's snow, and my nephew and his son turned positive this am. So we will be a small group this year. Pretty socks. I cannot get the hang of knitting socks, although I've tried. I love the blue blocks in the quilt. Merry Christmas to all!
ReplyDeleteHiVicki! Twenty inches!! I can honestly say I wouldn't have left home, either. Yowza. That's a LOT of snow. I'm glad they were able to keep warm. It's nice you could amuse yourself with all that extra free time! Great job on the socks - it's always nice to have warm feet. {{Hugs}} ~smile~ Roseanne
ReplyDeleteThe Iris Quilt is such a fun pattern to make. Your fabrics looks so nice in this pattern. Love your socks, too!
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty quilt! I like the uniqueness of those socks - love socks! I'm guessing your son might live somewhere between Vancouver and Salt Lake, as I know my friends in that area had 17-50 inches of snow at the end of last week! But probably other places did, too. So glad they could stay warm! I have some emergency propane, as well as cans of Crisco that make nice light and a little heat, if things are really bad. Emergencies like that don't happen here often, but this is the winter for it!
ReplyDeleteI’m so glad your son was safe and that he didn’t freeze. Sorry you missed seeing him. The quilting on your Iris quilt is lovely. I have done that design on two of my own quilts before after seeing you do it years ago. I have heard that hand knit socks are the coziest. Enjoy your new socks!
ReplyDeleteNice work on the socks and quilt, using your extra time! Sorry about the visit not working out, but great that their pipes didn't freeze!!! That would've been a nightmare.
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful socks! I am the same with occasional hand pain and can only hand stitch as arthritis allows!
ReplyDeleteThe socks are fabulous. I just ran into a pair I was trying to make and some yarn I had stashed for socks. Well, first to my husband's hat and then on to the socks! I am sorry your son wasn't able to come as planned. I hate the worry about pipes freezing when the heat is off in the winter!
