String progress + cross stitch

I have made a little progress on my bright string quilt. The white sashing with orange cornerstones got added. I cut the sashing at 1.5". Next I will add a white border all around cut the same as sashings. The plan from there is to make a piano key type border with more strings.

There is a finish today also...A little cross stitch pillow using a pattern from Primrose Cottage. This was one of their free monthly patterns. If you didn't know they offer a free cross stitch and a free quilting pattern in their monthly newsletter but you have to sign up.

Did you notice the background color of the Aida cloth? I used a green colored pencil and went over the white Aida to get a light green. I have no idea how this will hold up over time but I don't plan to wash it so I am not worried. This piece has been stitched since November and just now finished it into a little six inch pillow.

  2. Your string blocks look great with the sashing and cornerstones! The orange is so fun. I love your St. Patrick's Day stitch, too. I'm still working on the Valentine's Day one - it feels like it is taking forever, lol!

  4. that looks good lightly brushed over with the color pencil - I have done that on a quilt block with one piece of a print but haven't finished the quilt so didn't know if it would stay in or not

  6. The string quilt is looking great, Vicki. I love the narrow sashing and cornerstones. Cute cross-stitch as well. I have that one saved, like so many others, but haven't stitched it. Glad to see it finished in a pillow ;)

  7. I would never have guessed your pillow is small. Perfect for adding a touch of the Irish amongst the everyday decor.

  9. Such a cute cross stitch. Coloring the Aida was brilliant! I've seen folks color in a flower or design but not the whole background - love that idea.
Your strings look fantastic! I really need to make some strings because those bins are bulging.

  14. Great string blocks. Ok, please share the size of the blocks and whether you use paper backing while making them. I like the strings being different sizes but none are huge. Now the question for me is do I have enough bright strings to copy your idea? I have bags of strings hanging around. And, thanks to my granddaughter they are separated by color. Are you saying the pillow is 6"? Good gracious what was the thread count on the Aida? It is darling. I like the idea of counted cross stitch but I don't do a lot of it.

  16. Those string blocks are just fun and I love the pop of orange. The light green coloring of the aida cloth is fun, and I expect it will last a bit. I wonder if Aida cloth would take the colored watercolor pencils...derwent. They are permanent but maybe hard to control on the cloth...might be a fun experiment.
