Fabric Acquisition and Bunnies

 Remember I mentioned last Friday that I was going out of town to a fabric estate sale. Indeed I went, it was 1.5 hr drive one way. It's always bittersweet as a quilter has passed and left loads of fabric behind. Sad to think she won't be getting the projects done she had hoped.  The husband hired the Amish to display and sell it for him. The fabric was displayed nicely by color or holiday in the Amish greenhouse. I really enjoyed going through and filling my bag with goodies. The two young gals working told me they still had about 20 rubbermaid tubs to set out yet.  I hated to leave as I wanted to see what else they had!!  But my wallet said I had to go. After I got home I pressed and wound each piece around my 6" ruler and made a pretty stack.  

I also found yardage of two different neutrals and that blurry spot in the back there is yardage of black. I use a lot of solid black for bindings on runners so I was ecstatic to find this. All of the fabric was $4 a yard and those were tagged. If it didn't have a tag it was $16 a pound and they were estimating 4 yards to a pound. It came out pretty equal, I measured and counted while I was winding around the ruler. All together I brought home 54 yards. I learned the lady's name was Rita, so I will send up a silent thank you to her when I use her fabric. 

Yesterday I got busy and finished up the three bunny table runners, aren't they adorable!

Estate sale

Many of you encouraged me to go to the fabric estate sale last week...it's all your fault that these followed me home!!  This batch is for my business sewing.

And these are for some donation quilting I will be getting at soon I hope!

I arrived just a few minutes before the sale was to start, several ladies beat me!  The doors opened promptly at 3 pm.  This took place in the quilters home, I learned her name was Elaine and that she was a prolific quilter and entered her quilts in shows. Although I didn't know her I am sure she will be missed.  Oh the amount of fabric was astounding! Several shoppers were commenting they were overwhelmed with the amount, me...I was in my element, LOL.  The fabric was displayed in rooms according to the type. One room was floor to ceiling shelves lining it and tables full in the middle, this was flat folds.  One room was all kits and FQ's, one room of partially done quilts. One room was kits. As you can see by my photos I went for the flat folds. They were selling the fabric for $6 per pound. What you see is 10 pounds. It makes me sad they she didn't get to use all the wonderful fabrics. But as one lady said it feels like we are honoring Elaine by taking some of her stash and adding to ours in hopes of using it.

The hand embroidered block was stitched late last fall and I never got around to finishing it.

Even though I made it as a wall hanging with a sleeve on the back I like it just sitting on a small table.

Embroidered Pumpkin Wagon

 I believe this pumpkin wagon block was embroidered last fall and then I ran out of time(aka-ignored it).  It has been sitting in a basket this whole time just waiting to be finished up.  This past week I worked on it in spurts, after finishing the checkerboards I couldn't decide how I wanted to finish it.  I texted Wendy at Piecefulthoughts.com/ with a photo of some samples of finishes and asked for her thoughts.  We agreed just putting on a green border would finish it nicely.  I am very happy with how it looks!  

Since I was working with scraps for practically this whole wall hanging I didn't have more of the inner green.  But thanks to a fabric acquisition on Friday, more on that in a moment, I had a green that was of the same coloring.  

I really enjoyed hand embroidering this little pumpkin wagon in the evenings while watching TV.  The embroidery pattern designer is Primitive Stitches. 

I hand sewed on three little leaf buttons after it was all quilted.  Some people worry about quilting over hand embroidery. Really there is no problems with it, I used a glide cream to match the background fabric and did a simple cross hatch. 

In the interest of using more scraps I pieced the back of this 21"x21" project.  I tend to add a split sleeve on these small projects so you only have to put on nail or pin in your wall in order to hang it. 

One could use it as a table topper if you wanted!  I will be linking with August Table Scraps Challenge where embroidery and orange were the requirements.  And since I used scraps I am linking with Oh Scrap!

Now about the fabric acquisition from Friday, a quilter who happened to be a nurse passed away from Covid last year, so sad.  Her friends and neighbors put on an estate sale with all of her belongings. I didn't know her but I heard the basement was just full of fabric and they had a presale for her friends before opening it up to the public. Well there was still plenty of fabric to pick from when I got there.  Here is my haul, charm packs $4 each,  Fqs $1, and yardage was $4.  All of the yardage I got except for one has metallic gold accents, my customers love that in the runners.  And the rulers were $3 each.  There was tons of books there on everything from sewing, embroidery to quilting. I didn't need any of those. But it's times like this that makes one really think of your stash...and then I go buy more, HA!
