A little knitting and lots of crocheting

When we travel I like to have some hand work that I can easily do while hubby is busy driving otherwise I get bored.  And I have lots of yarn and like to make something useful.  Therefore over the last 3 years I crocheted hats for young kids.  I tried different free patterns and then add my own touches here and there using different stripes or stitches.  These have been done for a while except for weaving in the ends so last week I did this in a couple of evenings. Yesterday I delivered 43 hats to Family Services. I needed to get them done and out to youngsters as we are in the cold spell area that is hitting several states as I write.

The knitting is the start of another sock for me. I love the self striping yarn. And the colors in this are so perfect for me as I wear lots of purple and teal color shirts with jeans.  

In the sewing department I have been digging out working on a few UFO's. But that is a topic for another post:)

Knitted Socks and crocheted hats

First there was one...

And then they were a pair;)  I used Kroy self striping sock yarn. 

I started them last November and finished in February and kept forgetting to post about them.  I am a slow hand knitter as it bothers my wrists, not to mention I have lots of other things I like to do.  You know I think I might just start another pair tonight!  Seems like a good night to do it as we have 7" of new snow.  The snow had all melted and then the Easter bunny thought we needed more and it started in this morning and hasn't quit all day:(  It was also in the 60's this past week, now it's 31 deg.  I want warm weather again!!

The other thing I have been doing off and on the last three months is crocheting these little kiddies hats.  They are so fast, about an hour or so for each one.  The yarn is a worsted weight Red Heart and I think it is an I hook.  There are tons of free patterns on the internet, I might start off with one and then add variations to it. I have a bunch more of these made but only laid out a few.  I'll show the rest another time.  These are great past times in the evening or on car rides.

Sunday Scrapiness

Over at Cynthia's Oh Scrap Sundays are always fun and inspiring. Check out what Cynthia is working on plus lots of others that link up!
Here is my scrapiness for this Sunday...  first up I am happy to say I finished my Disappearing Hourglass from Missouri Star Quilt Company.  In the end I have 10 green and 10 blue blocks.  Some of you asked if I found this fiddly to work with. No I didn't really, however the one thing I found most helpful is to pay attention to how your block is laying when you cut it apart and sew it in the final step of the block itself. Be consistent so your seams nestle the right way. I didn't pay attention for a few of them it seems as I had to tweak a few seams in the back to get them to nestle up to the next one. It came out in the end by doing that.  I had to search through some stash to find the right fabric for the outside border. It is a dark green Thimbleberries tone on tone that pulled it all together.

Since I cut 10" strips x WOF from yardage of 10 different greens and 10 different blues, that means you get 4 blocks of each print. So yep you might have guessed I have lots of leftover 10" sqs. What that means is there will be 3 more quilts of this style in the future! I just need to get more light yardage before I continue on. For the next ones I will use a different pattern of theirs-disappearing pinwheel and some of their others-so I don't get bored ya know!  I love how it came out. It measures at 55 x 65"  Into the 'to be quilted' pile it goes for now.

 Earlier this month I went to a Saturday sewing day with friends, we call our little group The Mod Squad.  It's a group of us that want to share our love of modern quilting with each other. We have a little meeting, some show and tell then we get down to sewing whatever project we bring. I had cut out a bunch of strips to make these blocks and worked on the while there. Once again when you cut strips off yardage you end up with loads of extra after doing one of these little quilts that measure 32.5" sq. when done...

 so of course there are more flimsy's in the making! I ran out of aqua blocks so I will have to make a few to finish up.  I think I still have enough blocks to put together another one!! The borders will all be different. These will get donated to our local Neonatal.  In the past they have asked for ones alike for triplets, well I will have some for quads!  I hope to finish them all up in the next week or so.

When I need a break from sewing I do a little crocheting-OMG how adorable is this little baby hat???  It was a quick one to do-I made it this morning!  I found the pattern on Craftsy a while back, downloaded it and forgot. While looking through my downloads last night I found it and thought I should try it and I am so glad I did!

Hats and another UFO in progress again

My daughter wanted me to crochet animal hats for my grandsons-well of course I would do that! I found the cutest patterns on Repeat Crafter Me that she really liked.  A tiger for the little guy and a dalamation for the older grandson. The tiger fit perfectly but the dalmation is a tad big but it still works and he may get to wear it next year too.

And yet another UFO back in the works. Back in January of this year I pieced this X Block flimsy

which apparently I never blogged about. It isn't quilted yet and that might be why I never mentioned it.  Anyways with the X Block you have lots of leftover pieces like this...

You are supposed to piece them for borders, but I chose not to, so into a box for a later project they went.  This week is the time to finish it up. So I got 1/2 of them pieced and trimmed. I used my rectangle Bloc Loc ruler to trim, it makes trimming easier and faster. I am not 100% sure of how this is going to look but it will be a quilt flimsy-hopefully before the week is done.
