Scrappy Tumbler

It's a scrappy tumbler finish! These tumblers were leftover from previous tumbler quilts and in an effort to cut down on UFO's I finished it up.

Trying something different to calm down the busy tumblers by adding the solid blue sashing between rows.

I love working with the bright fabric for a child's quilt. Especially on Minnesota winter days. Although the days have been kinder to us the past week with temps touching 40 some days. I won't complain much about our weather after seeing all the destruction in the south and the crazy amounts of snow out west. My heart goes out to those who have lost everything and to the families of loved ones lost.

I used a solid light blue fleece for the backing and no batting for this one. This leaves the quilt very squishy and cuddly especially since I just quilted it with an all over meander. This quilt will head to the H2H (Hands 2 Help) donation pile, that makes 2 so far.  More on the horizon:)

Project Quilting 14.4-QUILT

Project Quilting 14.4 is all about Novels- the rule was your project had to reflect a book you have read. The other rule is that it must meet at least one of these requirements: include patchwork, include appliqué, have 3 layers stitched together by hand or machine.

I took a few days to think about which book, as I have read several romance novels. However that is not the avenue I went down. My mind kept wandering back to quilting, I remembered really enjoying Jennifer Chiaverini books.  So my mini QUILT will remind me of those books while it hangs in my sewing room.

I picked two scrap 10" squares of Island Batik fabrics and sandwiched batting between them. Let the quilting begin, since this was a small project I quilted it on my domestic machine with a decorative wiggle and then a straight stitch in between those lines.  The heart was cut using an Accuquilt heart die after applying fusible web to the blue batik fabric.  Accuquilt's 2" alphabet came in handy to cut QUILT out of felt which I had applied fusible web to also.  What a fun little wall hanging. This was my second PQ challenge and I really enjoyed it!

On a Quest...

To use up a fat quarter bundle, that is what I am on a quest for.  These pretty fabrics have just been hanging around too long.  They started off as a quilt and then the leftovers (aka scraps) just sat there.  Next came a table runner that I showed you on Friday, you can see that HERE.  It is now time to use them up or at least get close to using them up!

This one has a totally different look, nothing like the one I showed you Friday.  But it's from the same pattern book,  Anka's Treasure's book called On The Run Again.  I confess I did go out and acquire a few more fabrics, just to use up the FQ bundle...hmmm does that even make sense to buy more to use up some, LOL.  Oh the mind of a quilter😂😂.

The two polka dot fabrics were purchased and am I ever glad I did.  At the time I wasn't intending on using them both in the same runner.  But after quilting it I grabbed the solid navy to use as a binding and then spied the navy with white polka dot and bam! It's perfect for it😋

An allover quilting of lettuce leaf feathers around a swirl seemed just right for this one.  I used a light gray Glide thread and an 80/20 batting.

Here comes the next runner with the same fabrics.  Also from On The Run Again.  I mean while I had the book out I might as well see what else I can whip up.

This one just seemed to need a solid navy to pull it all together.  Although the three runners have all used the same FQ bundle fabrics they all seem so different don't they?  It's been fun seeing them come together.  Guess what, there will be more as I still have fabric left!!!  This bundle is really getting stretched out.

I love that I had the perfect backing in the stash, both of these used the same one.  Linking my scrappy projects to Oh Scrap, and Design Wall Monday.

Wishing you all a Happy Easter!

Yummy Pineapple

Pictures are a good thing to have.  I love looking back at all the table runners I have made, it helps me realize what I might need to remake.  My pineapple table runner needed to get remade and in the shop since it is an everyday type, meaning you can decorate with it all year long.

The pineapple is made using 2.5" squares from scraps.  I have a little bag of gold/yellows all precut so it is easy to whip up one of these one when I need it.

The piecing was done Friday morning and the quilting followed in the afternoon.  The pineapple block was found through a Pinterest link.

Charm squares

In the spirit of using some stash and doing good at the same time I whipped up this donation quilt. Originally I saw it on Cynthia's blog. She led me to the pattern from Cheryl for Moda.  So they were both my inspiration for this quilt.  The charm pack was one of 4 identical ones I won from our local guild quilt show a few years ago!  At the moment I can't remember whose charm pack it is.  I paired it up with some solid light pink and white.

It was a fun little flimsy quilt to whip up. One could use stash and cut 5" squares to make it with your scraps. I am guessing that will happen at my house in the future.  I hope to use my Accuquilt to cut charms out of my scraps this winter. Thanks Cynthia and Cheryl for the inspiration!

Orange scraps make great pumpkins

I love it when I can use up some scraps/strings in my table runners.  I did not have to cut a single orange or gold from yardage to do these pumpkins.  The black of course came from yardage. In fact I have used up all of that fabric.

The pumpkin blocks were started during our camping trip to Paducah in April.  Then they sat in a tote while I worked on other things after getting home. Yesterday I pulled them out and started in finishing them and before the day was done I had three flimsy runners done.  Ahhhhhhhh.

These were inspired from a pattern of a pumpkin quilt/wall hanging by Cottage Rose that I picked up last summer at the MN quilt show.  Here is my wall hanging that I did last year.  After making it I kept thinking this would made a great runner.  These are some really fun and quick blocks to make. I will be making a wall hanging also.  Now they can wait their turn for quilting;)

This is technically a UFO since it was started and then sat waiting to get finished.  So I will link to Tish's UFO party.   And since they were made using scraps I will link to Cynthia's Oh Scrap.  It's a rainy day here, I think I will go sew some more!

Scraps and a jelly roll

Ahhhh, something I could do just because...

So I had started making strip blocks with my red scraps during one of our camping trips last year.  Then set it aside and it got buried kinda deep:0  This past week I found myself with some free time and thought of these and decided to see how many I had gotten done before.  Not many, haha.  So I decided this would be a good first project on my featherweight that I bought a few months ago. I had lots of red strips already cut in 10" lengths of many different widths.  I just grabbed and sewed.  So enjoyable!  Then I trimmed them into 9.5" sqs since I had the 9.5" square ruler.  The corners are 2.5" cut sqs and using the sew, flip and cut method I quickly added those to the red squares.  The sashings are cut 2" wide.  Lots of scraps used up in this 2 color quilt.  So a UFO becomes a flimsy.

And then I gave myself permission to start a whole new quilt using the above 2 jelly rolls.  These have 20 strips in each roll and I got them for $10 each!  Score!  I am loving the look I am getting.  So fun starting a new project, I decided not to be so hard on myself this next year.  Yes I have lots of UFO's but I am giving myself permission to do whatever pleases me this next year.  And if that means starting another new project that's OK!!!   So how about you, what are you going to work on for the New Year?

Speaking of New Year, I am also starting a new quilt on New Years Day too.  Fellow blog friend, Roseanne, who blogs at Home sewn by us, is having a sew along for the Regatta quilt pattern by Daniela O'Connell from Block M Quilts.  More info on Roseanne's blog.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and hoping you will get everything you wanted!

The Wigglin' Monkeys

I am feeling good about my accomplishments again. I seem to go in streaks of finishing a bunch of things and then just working on lots of things at once and not finishing any.  This Wiggle Time has monkey fabric for the background and the yellow and brown were scraps left from other projects.

This design is more elongated than my favorite hook swirl, but is still very fun and quick to do.

Monkeys are wiggling their way onto the back also.  They will also wiggle their way to Project Linus for the H2H drive.

This is another of my 2nd quarter goals for FAL, which brings my total done to 4 already!

Last Wednesday a friend came over to help me go through my bin of neutral scraps to make another string quilt sewn on phonebook pages.  Here is her handi work...  As she pressed I had her hang them onto a clothes drying rack.  Now mind you, this didn't even make a teeny dent in my bin!

Here is my 12 blocks I managed to get done after I cut a bunch of different sizes of squares for other projects.

Here is my total since Wednesday-30 blocks.

Super Scrappy for H2H and FAL

When the April color was picked for RSC17, and I learned it was mixed colors, I knew this quilt would be a good one to get finished up and have it serve three purposes this month.  A friend had given me a bag with the print blue squares, with monkeys, polka dots, confetti, and jungle animals all cut. I added yellow to make them into nine patches, red polka dots for sashing and the multi color stripe fabric for a border to pull it all together.

First purpose was for ScrapHappy Saturday for RSC17

Second purpose was for giving it to H2H  that Sarah has going on right now.  This is my second quilt finished for H2H this year.  You can find the first one HERE.

Third purpose was to list it as one of my eleven projects to finish up this quarter for FAL 2017.  Yes I feel good about getting a finish so early in the quarter!  This little 45" square quilt needed it's quilting and binding.  An Easy allover water type design made it quick work.

It's So Very Easy

I ran across this video from  Sew Very Easy last month, and I had one of those days where I had nothing planned so I jumped right in and made this little quilt.  It's 36x45.

Such a simple block, but when put together, it makes a fun pattern.  She also shows in the video many different settings you can do. My 5" squares were all from scraps that I am trying to clean up from the 80's-90's mauve/blue coloration.

Did you notice I said I made it last month, and here it is all quilted already!!  Aren't you proud of me! I usually do a lot of piecing and then a lot of quilting so this is a rare thing for me to have an all finished project so quickly!  The freehand allover quilting consists of a feather swirl and sometimes a hook feather thrown in.

My Friday Finishes

I will show you three of the six finishes this week. Yes I got right busy with quilting 6  baby quilts, some of which I pieced in the last 8 days. On Monday I showed you my 4 triangle blocks. Here it is all finished. The background is navy which is hard to get a good picture of.  The pattern is Triangle Toss and can be found in the May/June 2012 issure of McCalls Quilting. I adapted the size to accommodate my already cut triangles leftover from past projects.
I kept the quilting simple but chose a fun variegated thread from YLI.  This thread was given to me and I have never used it, I love it and it was perfect for this colorful quilt.

This little quilt was started last spring. It uses the Bloc Loc Kite ruler. I chose to use some fun 30's prints. All I had to do last week was add the 2 sets of borders and quilting happened Tuesday and binding yesterday.
An allover fun freehand feather with some pink thread added to the little girliness of this quilt.

These fun pre-printed bear blocks were given to me a while back and got shoved put into my stash to be used later.  This was later, out they came and now what to do with them. I had to add all kinds of stuff to make them into this 36" neonatal quilt. Out came some pink and white scraps to add in squares, pinwheels, sashing and borders. I think it came out so cute! It's so fun to take nothing and make it into something.

Simple allover freehand double loops with pink thread was used for the quilting.

A shot of all the bindings. Turtles for the navy triangle quilt, stripes for the bears and a yellow for the 30's quilt. The batting in all of these are polyester, not that I like working with it. But it is less expensive for donation quilts, and it is also softer for baby quilts. There is a lot of texture with the simpler quilting.

If you have never made a quilt to donate I encourage you to do it! It is rewarding and you get 'warm fuzzy' feelings when you deliver them and they are so appreciative.  And nope the warm fuzzies don't leave lint on your clothes, LOL  Love that one Louise!

Joining in with a few of the linky parties on my left side bar.  Off to check out a few other blogs that also joined in. And then I need to get back to quilting-working on 3 table runner orders.

Scrappy Stars

Two years ago I bribed a friend into coming over and pressing strings and scraps from the scrap bin(s) in return for some quilting. While she pressed away I cut away into 5" squares,  5" strips etc. with certain patterns in mind to use them in the future. I did use 'some' of the strips but those 5" sqs were still waiting their turn. This past Thursday I got them out and also found 2.5" squares already cut. Yeah I was all set to just sew those babies up.  Pedal to the Metal!!

Alright 2 blocks done and up on the design wall. Stood back admired them...well shoot, I didn't have the perfect star block, do you see my mistake?  Those 2.5" squares were not big enough to make the star points correct. But, hmmm, I want to use what's cut and get on with it. So I did, I left it the way it was.  And in the end it worked out OK, not perfect but OK.  This will be a donation quilt, it will still keep someone warm and wrapped in a quilty hug.

Four blocks were done on Thursday. Friday I had an adventure with three friends. We went to check out a craft sale an hour north of me to see if  I might want to vend at it next year.  I took a few samples with me, table runners, snowmen and children's sweaters. The gals in charge loved them and wished I could have been there this year. Yeah me too. It was in her home, she clears out a lot of furniture and sets up several crafter's wares in all the rooms on the main floor. Very nicely arranged. She has some table runners there, but mine were different enough, she had no fabric snowmen and no children's sweaters. She wants me to bring stuff next year, so I left really stoked!!

And we three friends had lunch out and went to another craft sale before heading home. A great day was had.  So after all that I managed to sew a bunch more blocks and finished up more today and was able to get them sewn together. I am glad I decided to stagger them and cut a couple blocks in half to fill in the top and bottom of each column.  So far it is all from the scrap bins!!  Next I will plan a border, which most of it will be from scraps.

I wrote the draft for this post last night before going to bed. And this is what we woke up to this morning-last we knew we were only to get an inch or less. There is 3 inches for sure and man the trees are thick this morning, it is still snowing. But in MN this is normal so no bigee. This is the first measurable for the season.

2nd RSC16 flimsy finish

Last weekend I finished up the first RSC16 flimsy and now I have the second flimsy finished. Ahhhh it feels so good to be nearing the finish of these. I love them but also am tired of looking at them, LOL
So plain and simple here it is...
You will notice I added the top and bottom borders just like the one from last weekend. I needed to make it rectangular instead of square(for my own purposes!).  So out came the scrap bin again, better to use more up so I can get the lid on it;-)  Did you notice how I color coordinated the border with the block right below or above it?  So glad I did that rather than a hodge podge of colors along the width of the border.

I hope everyone is getting their RSC16 flimsies together!!  Next month we quilt and bind them.
Now onto Christmas decorating inside and out for the next week. But I will still find time to sew in between. After all I have to try out my new Koala Sew Comfort Chair-it's my Christmas present. I wanted to get it early to get a special for Black Friday at my local sewing center.  I am not sure that it wouldn't have been that price all along but it sounded good, LOL

What I love most about this chair is that it can raise up to a ridiculous height.  My sewing counter is higher than what a sewing cabinet would be and I have not been able to find a comfortable chair to raise that high until now. The fact that it has 5 legs(a definite plus), instead of my old office chair with 4 and it swivels so nicely. Too many times I have almost tipped that thing over.  Now I won't ever want to leave my sewing room, oh wait it was like that before, hahaha.

Scrappy progress

Last weekend's post on Scrappy Goodness I showed you 2 new projects and told you I started a third one. Here is the third one all pieced, it's Wiggle Time by Cynthia Brunz.  I think it is my go to pattern for a quick quilt to use up some fabric. My dark blue flowered background was in my stash, as well as enough scraps of the red, yellow and green to whip this one up. I have made several of this pattern now and I am still not tired of it;-)  I apologize for the horrible picture, our weather did not cooperate to take it outside.

I made progress on my Missouri Star Pinwheel in a churn dash blocks. I had the blue ones done last weekend and now I added these 6 green ones. Four more need to be done this week.

I now have this one into a flimsy, so I think I had a good week of sewing.

This week in between a Dr. appt, babysitting, Turkey day and Black Friday I need to work on my RSC16 blocks to get them into flimsies.  Scrap on my fellow bloggers!

Scrappy Yellow and Gray

I have been slacking in my RSC16 blocks, so today I caught up with my grey August blocks and my yellow October blocks for one of my 2 scrappy's in progress. I decided not to do the brown and the red blocks.

Here are all my blocks layed out. I am happy with them like this-at least for now;-)

Be sure to stop back on Wednesday as I am participating in a blog hop for fellow Island Batik Ambassador Suzy for her new book.

Wiggling onward!

Last week I showed a Wiggle Time quilt I made smaller for a neonatal quilt. This week I will show you the finished tops for two more. These I made the size in the pattern. Love making this pattern by Cynthia. I really wanted to make more but I needed to get back to making table runners and other things for the upcoming craft show in less than 3 weeks!

I will be quilting these up over our Minnesota winter and then donate to Project Linus.

Aren't these little monkeys adorable!!
