Scrap quilts

My fourth donation quilt this year.

Earlier this month I shared that I was trying to do the leader ender thing again.  In the past it seemed I never stuck to it, I would forget to use them even when they sat right next to the sewing machine. This time I did better but then it got to a point I just wanted to get the quilt done. It was no longer my leader ender it became my priority. It's been pieced for a week, Saturday I pieced the backing and quilted it. While you are reading this I might be working on the binding;) This is my fifth donation quilt so far this year.  I'll show you more in a few days.

Colorful Strings

 Do any of you remember me working on these bright string blocks over the winter? They are now a complete finish, quilted and bound on Friday and Saturday. 

My first donation quilt finish for 2026. These string blocks were sewn to phone book pages. I had saved several books before they became obsolete!!

Recently I purchased some fabric from a friend that was out of the quilting desire and wanted to get rid of her stash. Some I will set aside for business fabric and some went into my donation fabric stash. The bright backing is one I got from her.

You might also recognize these orange pineapple blocks which were also made over the winter. After binding the above quilt I went on to add the neutral sashings and brown corner stones so it moved closer to the finish line. Now I just need to find a suitable fabric for the backing, which is proving harder than I thought it would be! This will also be a donation quilt. 

Both of these quilts are made from strings leftover from gobs of other projects!

Pumpkin Stack

 Looks like I am deep into fall quilting right now, I love it! Lots of little pieces in the sunflower but so worth it :)

The pattern is called Pumpkin Stack from Karen Walker at Laughyourselfintostitches. I found it to be well written and easy to follow. There might have been a couple made last year and I pieced two over the winter. This is the first to be quilted, bound and listed in my Etsy shop.

I tried out a new hanging sleeve technique with less edges to hand sew down. These are 6.5" squares folded twice to get a triangle. Laura from Sew Very Easy showed this technique on You Tube. 

My finished wall hanging is 27"x17". 

We went on a little camping trip last week heading up to northern Minnesota. The weather was hot and humid but thankfully we had electric hookups. We tried out a new to us campground, it was our first time using a COE(Core of Engineer) campground, it was very nice. But it was misleading on their website it stated it was electric and water and showers. We got there with no water on board the fifth wheel only to find out there was not water at each campsite after we got all backed in and set up! Lucky for us we were right next to the camp host who lent us his hose and hooked with ours we could get water from his source.  Very nice camp though, quiet and not full either. And a very good price.  We went there to pick Juneberries and blueberries in the wild out on the ATV trails. Hmmm, we were so disappointed to find they were past their prime and we only got a few.  

After that we went to our son and DIL's for the weekend. We enjoyed seeing them, went for a hike and to the aquarium. The weather was hot and humid there too.  Came home Monday and flipped on the AC and I don't care to go anywhere right now! So I finished the above wall hanging yesterday. While we were gone the cucumber on the deck survived the wind and rain and produced cuc's for us to eat right away. There will be more in a few days. The garden gave forth two zucchini and tomatoes.

I took this stack of 10 quilts to my DIL for her church group to hand out to those in need. A bag of hand knit slippers also went to her. It feels good to help out and she so appreciated each of them. She had to take them out of the bag and look at each one. I love that!!

Scrappy stars

 This scrappy stars quilt crossed the finish line almost one year to the date of it starting!  No I didn't plan that at all. As I was getting ready to write this post I thought I would do a quick search of old blog posts to see if I could find out when I started it. You can read that post HERE if you want to.

It's been done and waiting for pic's for a week. Too much rain to get it outside for photos, and to dark in the house to show up, so I waited it out. All scraps from the scrap bin stash. The burgundy backing is a curiosity as I do not know where that came from but it was in the donation quilt fabric cupboard.

I have done a version of this at least once before. 

A quick stipple and it is done. I am getting quite a nice stack of quilts to give to my DIL's church group to hand out.

A little hand stitching is happening in the evenings here and there. This little piece was a freebie from Primrose Cottage which I started last winter and didn't get far before I wasn't in the mood to cross stitch anymore. Set it aside and picked it back up a few weeks ago.  Now to decide how best to finish it. Linking to Slow Stitching Sunday

Strings and progress with things

First the progress part of this post...Monday I mentioned I was working with these fabrics.  Today I show you that I made progress on this little quilt. The pattern says to cut into rectangles to make these blocks. I chose to make strips and then cut into the block size. I hope to finish piecing to show you the flimsy on Monday.

Here is the strings part of the post.  I often mention how my string mess collection has gotten out of hand and from time to time I sew up a few more. I'll never get caught up but I'll keep trying:)  I am not sure if I will snowball the corners like I did previously or choose something different.  I sew different width of strings and then trim to make consistent size blocks.  No hurry on these so don't look for a finish for a long long time, it's just a filler type project when I have the time/desire to make a few more.

Green for St. Patty's Day

It was a green day in my sewing room lately.  I believe it is not to early to think ahead to coming seasons or holidays. Plus it is always fun to pull out fabrics I haven't worked with for quite a while. Here is what I whipped up...

You all know how much I love working with the 10 degree wedge ruler and you most likely have seen both of these styles I have made before. They are just to fun not to make!!

And just to be a bit different I started with some spring like colors for a donation quilt. You will have to come back to see how it comes out;)

We frequently get deer coming through our yard, these two guys were attacking my pumpkin...

and then they started attacking each other and after several minutes of that this one lost one of his antlers!

Scrappy bricks

I don't know about you but I still have quilt fabric from the 80-90's lurking about. Yes I kinda hate admitting that but on the other hand with fabric getting so expensive I really love having a large stash to shop in!!  When I am making scrappy quilts for donation these work great.  

Using the #2 and #8 Accuquilt dies from the 12" cube made quick work of cutting the blue and neutral scraps for the bricks.  I keep checking out the companion sets for the 12" cube too. So many ideas floating about! I like the corner sets too!

I started this quilt in September at retreat and finished piecing the top here at home later on.  The quilting, which I kept simple, was done recently.

I had yardage in these blues also so that became a pieced back and navy binding. The plan is to give this quilt along with six others to my DIL who will give to her church group that goes to the Twin Cities to serve those in need. I hope someone will love cuddling up in it this winter.

Flower Power and more

Doesn't the border on this quilt remind you of flower power!!  It was so fun to make from a Villa Rosa pattern called Cinnamon Stix. A very easy and fast quilt to make.  I modified it a bit to fit the amount of fabric I had.  This is more child size. I had pieced it late this summer and quilted this week.

Some pretty pink flannel piecing for the back.

A quick stipple on the long arm keeps it soft and cuddly.

Since it was a quick finish I moved on to quilt this one that has patiently waited it's turn on the long arm.  I found a free tutorial for it HERE

Another quick stipple with a monkey print flannel back. These are both donation quilts. 

Nope not done yet!  This one was in the to be quilted pile also. This was not as quick to quilt as I did lots of custom on it with rulers and freehand.

  

The snowman is a panel and I added the green border, along with the black snowflake print with the inserted red strip to meet the friendship stars. I had made one last year and sold it, now this one is sold already too.  It's the last panel I have of it, so time to move on to a different one;)

My finishes for the week

I am so happy to have finished this quilt I was working on at retreat last month. This is the last time you will see it!!  This pretty purple was from a free pattern from Material Girlfriends. They publish one pattern a month for free, but you have to download it during that month. This one is called 3 yard Bravo.  

I couldn't finish the piecing while at retreat because I didn't cut enough for the last star block. So earlier this week I finished the star and added the three borders. The quilting happened the very next day.  Looking  digging through my stash I found the perfect backing, a lavender minky type of fabric that was given to me by a friend. I had not worked with this type of fabric before, it shed and I didn't like that. However, the final result is pretty luxurious!! 

Next up was a potato chip quilt that my grandson helped me make the blocks. We cut 2.5"x4.5" bricks in neutrals and darks using the die from the 8" AccuQuilt cube. This gave us a 12" finished block.

The backing is a pretty fall leaves flannel that the same friend gave me. I just needed to add a navy flannel to make it big enough. All of these quilts are meandered in order to get them done. I finished this one off with a navy solid binding.

The final one I will share today is this child size one using Cynthia's Two bits pattern. I pieced this one quite some time ago and was waiting it's turn in line to be quilted. 

I found a very soft tiny corduroy that was also given to me. It was almost the right size. And as luck would have it I had all these strips sewn together into the right size to add to it. The corduroy was a very light pink but it really looks washed out here. 

These three quilts will be donation quilts that I will send home with my DIL when they come for Thanksgiving. She hands them off to her church group who distributes to those who need a quilty hug. And I feel great being able to help. I have a few more to finish and share with you soon.

2024 Donation Quilts

If you have been following me this year you know that I have been working on several UFO quilts for donation. Some I pieced over the last few years, some were in multiple stages which made them UFO's. I managed to get seven of them to flimsy stage and have been quilting them up in the last couple weeks. I had to order batting in order to finish them all. 

Here is my parade of 2024 donation quilts...

These elongated string blocks were started many years ago, ahem 2018! When my grandsons were over we worked on them off and on and then I finished a bunch myself. These strings are sewn onto phonebook pages, I taped two together to get a long strip. This first one was pieced to flimsy stage a couple years ago.

As you can see we had a rainbow of string blocks and enough for two quilts. The blocks were pieced a couple years ago and I brought it to flimsy stage, quilted and bound it this year.  An elephant print flannel was perfect for the back of this one.

Another type of string quilt was pieced and into flimsy stage when I left off with it many years ago. I couldn't decide back then if I wanted to make it bigger.  This year I found the answer. Nope I did not, LOL. I wanted it quilted and out the door into the hands of someone that needed a quilty hug. 

This one is a free pattern from A Bright Corner called Preppy and was pieced in 2021 and quilted recently. This one has a fleece backing and no batting for a soft cuddly quilt.

I found a panel in the stash that someone had given me a while back and it worked perfectly for the backing!

This was never a UFO as I pieced it in June and quilted in July. The pattern is White Cloud from Villa Rosa Designs. You might remember I made a Yellow and Gray one with the same pattern. They really look different don't they!  That's all seven quilts that I have ready to send back with my daughter-in-law this weekend, she takes them with her church group to Minneapolis to hand out to the needy.  I still have more I would like to finish up, three of which only need quilting but I ran out of time and energy for it right now.  

In the evenings I have been hand knitting kid slippers to send with her also. I have a dozen ready.
