Scrappy bricks

I don't know about you but I still have quilt fabric from the 80-90's lurking about. Yes I kinda hate admitting that but on the other hand with fabric getting so expensive I really love having a large stash to shop in!!  When I am making scrappy quilts for donation these work great.

Using the #2 and #8 Accuquilt dies from the 12" cube made quick work of cutting the blue and neutral scraps for the bricks.  I keep checking out the companion sets for the 12" cube too. So many ideas floating about! I like the corner sets too!

I started this quilt in September at retreat and finished piecing the top here at home later on.  The quilting, which I kept simple, was done recently.

I had yardage in these blues also so that became a pieced back and navy binding. The plan is to give this quilt along with six others to my DIL who will give to her church group that goes to the Twin Cities to serve those in need. I hope someone will love cuddling up in it this winter.

Sailing away

You might remember I mentioned when I was at retreat I couldn't go any further with my sailboat quilt because I had not cut the correct number of pieces. This is where I left off. I have a wayward sailboat, do you spot it! I am leaving it, not having a date with Jack.

I quickly finished the last sailboat and got started on the sashings Thursday.

Friday I finished up the sashings and am ready for the border and quilting this week.

This post contains affiliate links, if you use them there is no extra cost to you, however I will receive a small commission.

The sailboats are made using the 12" cube from AccuQuilt and the blocks finish at 12".  Dies #5 and #8 were used. This makes for a quick block. The sashings were all cut with the 1.5" strip die, I even cut the navy 1.5" squares with the strip die by laying the strips across the die.  Love the strip dies.

Projects of all kinds

Not a lot of motivation to stick with any one project so I am jumping back and forth on several. And then instead of working more on those already started I start another, LOL

A few weeks ago I acquired another Accuquilt die, the 6 1/2" tumbler and wanted to give it a try. So I went to my fabric donation cupboard and pulled a focus fabric, the black flowered one, and 4 coordinating ones. And started cutting with no real plan of how big, I can always cut more tumblers as I go.

After subcutting a 7"x WOF of each fabric and layering them I cut several tumblers and laid them out and discovered I was only going to have enough of the coordinating ones to do a small baby size quilt. Here is the start of it. I need to cut more tumblers again.

Progress has been made with the scrappy string snowball blocks also. I added the blue and red ones this week. I am pretty sure I will add a small neutral sashing between the columns. That will aid in keeping the bulk down as there are lots of seams in each block.

Lots more hats have been machine knitted too! I put three strands of a skinny 2/24 weight yarn together and get lots of fun different colored hats.  This yarn had been donated to me several years ago by a person I only met twice, she was moving out of state and couldn't take it with. She gave it to me for the purpose of making items to donate. There were 3 garbage bags full of big cones of this yarn. It just feels so good to finally have time and desire to whip out these hats. At this time I have knitted 60 hats since Christmas Eve day! It takes about 20-25 minutes to make one. There are 40 in this photo.

Here is one hanging on the machine, you are looking at the back side. The part that goes around your ears is double thickness. This one is ready to take off the machine, I use a double eye needle with double the strands of yarn and then pull it up tight after I get all the stitches off the machine.

The other night I decided I better get to finishing up my hand knitted sock so I finished the heel/gusset last night.

A quick baby quilt

After purchasing this Accuquilt tumbler die I was anxious to try it out. It is the 4 1/2" tumbler and perfect for a baby quilt. For this quilt I chose the focus fabric first which is the tractor fabric and then picked solids to coordinate with it.

What little boy wouldn't be thrilled to have a quilt with tractors!  It went together so easily using this die because the corners are cut, so you just line the fabrics and chain sew and it comes out great!

I had the perfect backing fabric in the stash, I also used it for the binding. I was just a bit short because I didn't cut quite enough binding so I added a red zinger scrap to finish it off. You can see that in the first photo and in this one.  This quilt was sent with my DIL last weekend along with the hats. This was finished up in the weeks leading up to Christmas.

It would seem that Accuquilt is always having a sale. Through January 9, 2023 they have 20% off Go! Die Bundles. Did you see that the January Die To Try is a pieced canning jar. If you click on Accuquilt link and purchase something I get a small commission at no extra charge to you.

Scrappy Placemats

I had a little free time today to quilt and bind these scrappy placemats.

I pieced these back in January-February area using red scrappy strings all different widths. And 2"x 4" finished flying geese units in gray, accented with black 1" finished black strips. Accuquilt 8" cube dies #4 and #5 for the geese and the 1.5" strip die for the black.

They would look festive for the holidays but could be used at any time of the year.  I could see these in lots of color ways.

For the backing I used this fun Santa face fabric that I found in the stash.

Squirrel takes a starry path

Happy mail arrived yesterday from AccuQuilt.  This die is called Starry Path, it's a BOB or Block on Board.  That means you can cut all the pieces needed for one block in one pass through the Go! cutter.  I hurried up and finished the project I was working on and had a few hours to play with the squirrels new die yesterday afternoon.

I decided to make it with Christmas color in red and green. A test block is always recommended to make sure you do it right and want to continue making enough blocks for your project.   The red, green and backgrounds pieces for one block were quickly cut.

First section all sewn, I get so impressed when everything lines up so good!  Let's do three more sections.

And here is the first finished block.  Can I just say I love it!!

Okay let's move onto the next block, hmmm something isn't looking right 😕.  Hmmm, perhaps I should read the directions😒.  Well duh that would have helped!!  This die is one of those you have to cut with the fabrics right side up, yup should have read the directions first!  Well since I already cut for another let's just try and sew it backwards...it worked but looks a little different. You can see it if you look at the fabric placements and angles. But since I don't want to waste the fabric I will make two blocks right and two blocks the opposite for a table runner.

It was a fun afternoon with the neighborhood squirrels!  I do believe this qualifies as a DrEAMI project too.

Thank you to all who host the Friday Linky parties that I will join in on:
DrEAMI (when it becomes available)

Weekly Goals

We meet again on this Tuesday to check out our goals for the coming week and see if we met last week's goals.

On my list last week- along with the photos of what I accomplished this week.

  • Start a new embroidery project ✅
I found this cute hand embroidery pattern in the Primitive Stitches Etsy shop.  A few evenings of stitchin' this week and it is all stitched.  Now I have to decide what I want to do with it from here.

  • Start a new pair of socks ✅
I am using two different yarns in an effort to use up leftovers.  One skein is a variegated green and the other variegated blue. So far I am changing colors every 10 rows for the leg. I thought it would be ugly when I started and now I kinda like the uniqueness of it!  I don't remember the name of the yarn but they are the same kind.

  • Patriotic Welcome wall hanging ✅
Almost the same as the previous one I made, but this one uses a different white fabric. You can find my pattern in my pattern Etsy shop

  • An applique stars patriotic table runner ✅
You can see a post on this finish HERE.

And on Saturday I finished this table runner using three Morning Star blocks from the Accuquilt Morning Star BOB(block on board).  This wasn't on my to do list but I had time and had the blocks already started. It didn't take long to add the borders and get it quilted and bound.

Goals for this week are:
  • Make a Cherry table runner
  • Make a cupcake table runner
  • Knit more on the sock
  • Work on a UFO cross stitch project
  • Use a mini charm pack in a table runner
  • Work on my One Monthly Goal-time is running out for the month and I have done nothing on it.
This is a healthy list so I better get a move on!!   Linking up with Linda at Texas Quilt Gal for To Do Tuesday.

Mixed Holiday Table Runners

This post covers three holidays, Christmas, St. Patrick's Day and Fourth of July.  Two round wedge toppers in Christmas fabrics were finished.

I have so much fun picking 5 fabrics that coordinate for these round wedge toppers.  And they are pretty quick to whip up once that is done.  I am just lucky to have a large fabric stash that works well together.

Onto the next holiday...Fourth of July.  I let my Accuquilt dies do some of the work for me. Using dies  # 4 and 5 from the 8 inch cube speeds up and adds the accuracy I want for making the flying geese units for the star.  Easy peasy and accurate!

And the third holiday in this post is St. Patrick's Day shamrock table runner.  Look at all the green scraps I used in the shamrocks. These two are for a local gal that ordered them a while back and was in no hurry.  But I needed to get them off my plate when I had the chance.  I was able to use the 3" strip die from Accuquilt for the outer borders on this one too. And of course the 2.25" strip die for the bindings!  See how I like to speed up things:)

And speaking of Accuquilt did you know they have several live Facebook videos each week.  If you sign up you have a chance to win dies from them.  Sometimes they even give away a cutter or fabric too.  On Tuesday October 5th they will be introducing a new die for a big upcoming holiday!  You can register HERE.

If you have thought about or are curious about an Accuquilt die cut machine you might want to check out the Launch Party they are having today.  They will be announcing the new and improved GO! Me Fabric Cutter Starter Set!  The event will be full of giveaways, special guests and inspiration! Be sure to register for the opportunity to watch along and win! https://events.accuquilt.com/gomelaunchparty”.  Hurry on over to register now and watch the party on Wednesday June 24th.

I know I love my Accuquilt, I used it more yesterday to cut 1.5" strips, 2.5" strips and bindings at 2.25".  Over the weekend I was able to spend a little time cutting scraps with the 2.5" square die. It's a lot easier to bust through some scraps with it than a ruler!!
